Cut, copy and paste elements

Most Google Web Designer elements, including complex elements like groups and components, can be cut or copied and pasted between documents or pages. Some limitations are listed below.

How to cut, copy and paste elements

Select the element or elements

There are different ways to select an element, including on the stage:

  1. Click the Selection tool in the toolbar on the left, or press V.
  2. Select the element or elements on the stage to cut or copy. You can select multiple elements.

You can then cut or copy the selection.

Cut the selection

If you want to delete the selection from its current location, use one of these methods:

  • Use the Edit > Cut menu command.
  • Right-click the selection and select Cut from the pop-up menu.
  • Press Ctrl+X (Windows) or +X (Mac).

You can then paste the selection that you cut.

Copy the selection to the clipboard

If you want to make a new copy of the selection, use one of these methods:

  • Use the Edit > Copy menu command.
  • Right-click the selection and select Copy from the pop-up menu.
  • Press Ctrl+C (Windows) or +C (Mac).

You can then paste the selection that you copied.

Paste the cut or copied selection

  1. Go to the destination document or page.
  2. Use one of the following methods to paste the selection that you cut or copied:
    • Use the Edit > Paste menu command.
    • Right-click the stage and select Paste from the pop-up menu.
    • Press Ctrl+V (Windows) or +V (Mac).

Animation keyframes, relevant events and dynamic data bindings for the pasted elements also get pasted by default, unless the destination document doesn't support them. If you want to paste elements without any animation, use the Edit > Paste without animations menu command.

Limitations

Based on document type

Some elements can't be copied and pasted into a document of a different type.

  • Elements cannot be copied and pasted between an AMPHTML and a non-AMPHTML document
  • HTML ads and HTML pages don't support:
    • video and audio tracks and clips
  • Image ads don't support:
    • animation
    • video and audio tracks and clips
    • components
    • iframes
    • elements
  • Video documents don't support:
    • components
    • iframes
    • elements

For masks

Masks can be cut, copied and pasted in a manner similar to elements, with the following limitations:

  • You can only select a single mask to cut or copy, and a single element to paste the mask onto.
  • Pasting a mask onto an element that already has a mask will replace the existing mask.
  • Masks cannot be cut, copied or pasted in media rules.

For dynamic data and variant bindings

Bindings for dynamic data or variants can be copied along with their bound elements in some circumstances:

  • When copying and pasting between HTML ads that use the same schema
  • When pasting to video documents or image ads from any source

Otherwise, bindings will be removed from the pasted element.

Sample data and variant data are not copied.
