Turning on verbose error logging

In some cases, users report problems that we're unable to duplicate. For cases like this, we have a verbose logging option that can help us diagnose the problem. No user data is contained in the log.

Once you have installed a new version of Google Web Designer or it has auto-updated your existing version, you need to be connected to the internet the first time that you use the tool.

If you have a problem that's hard to diagnose, you can perform the following steps to enable verbose logging:

  1. Close Web Designer if it is currently running.
  2. Turn on verbose logging. This setting should be turned on temporarily for these troubleshooting steps only and should be turned off when completed. To turn on verbose logging:
    • On Windows add a DWORD32 value named verbose-logging to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Web Designer\Settings in the registry. Set this value to 1.
    • On Mac add a Boolean row to ~/Library/Preferences/com.google.WebDesigner.plist with a name verbose-logging and a value of YES
You will also need to create a file named ~/Library/Preferences/com.google.WebDesigner-Helper.plist if it does not exist already. In that file add a Boolean row with a name verbose-logging and a value of YES
    • On Linux add a row to ~/.local/share/google-web-designer/preferences/settings.conf with a name verbose-logging and a value of true (If the [Settings] section doesn't exist, you'll need to create it first.)
  3. Make certain that you are connected to the internet.
  4. Launch Web Designer and run it until you encounter your problem.
  5. Close Web Designer.
  6. Email a zip file containing your log files to gwd-support@google.com. The logs can be found in the following locations:
    • Windows: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Google\Google Web Designer\logs
    • Mac: /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Google/Web Designer/logs
    • Linux: ~/.local/share/google-web-designer/logs/
  7. Turn off verbose logging. To turn off verbose logging:
    • On Windows set the verbose-logging value to 0.
    • On Mac set the verbose-logging value to NO.
    • On Linux set the verbose-logging value to false.
