Image Processing Overview - Google Web Designer

Image processing lets you manipulate images according to an algorithm. The following image processing operations are available in Google Web Designer:

• Auto enhancement
• Inpainting
• Extend image
• Extract subject
• Cropping

SVG images are not supported for image processing.

Open the Image Processing dialog by selecting the image and using the menu commands under Edit > Image Processing, or by right-clicking an image and selecting Image processing... from the pop-up menu. You can access all the image processing operations within the dialog.

After applying an operation, use the Undo and Redo buttons to see how the image looks before and after processing. You can also click Cancel to undo all changes and exit the dialog.

When you're satisfied with the image, click Save. The processed image is saved as a new asset in the Library with a unique suffix added to the filename (e.g., image_1.png).

Auto enhancement

Auto enhancement adjusts the brightness, contrast, and saturation of an image.

To apply auto enhancement, click the Auto fix button.

Inpainting

Inpainting gets rid of an unwanted object by painting over it to look like the surrounding area. You can specify the region for inpainting by one of the following methods:

• Use the Select region control to select a box around the desired region.
• Use the Draw region control to draw over the desired region. The Size slider lets you adjust the size of the drawing tool.

Inpainting occurs as soon as you complete the selection or drawing, but you can abort before releasing the mouse by pressing Esc.

Extend image

Extending an image fills the additional area with content generated to look like the rest of the image. You can extend an image along any side by 20% of the width or height. To extend an image:

1. Define the extending area, using one of the following methods:
   • In the Controls panel, specify the number of pixels that you want to extend each side of the image.
   • Drag the handles around the image to resize the extending area.
2. Click the Apply button.

Extract subject

Extracting a subject detects the foreground object in an image and makes the background transparent. The resulting image is saved in PNG format to support transparency.

1. Use the Select region control to select the area of the image that contains the subject, or select the entire image. The background (the parts of the image that aren't detected as the subject) is shaded red.
2. Use the Add to selection and Remove from selection controls to refine the selection, drawing over the parts you want to include or exclude as the subject.
   • The Size slider lets you change the size of the add/remove tool.
3. Click the Apply button.

Cropping

Cropping lets you trim an image, removing unwanted edges and resizing the image.

1. In the Aspect ratio dropdown, select the ratio of width to height that you want for the cropped image.
   • Custom: Freely resize the crop selection.
   • Original: Keep the same aspect ratio as the original image.
   • The numeric ratios trigger Google Web Designer to suggest a crop selection that fits your selected ratio.
2. Manually adjust the crop selection as needed.
   • Drag the handles along the edges of the crop selection to resize the selection. The selected aspect ratio is enforced.
   • Drag the selection to move it without changing its size.
3. Click the Apply button.
