Repeating email notifications 0 Recommended Answers 24 Replies 33 Upvotes

Whenever I get an email, I use the Gmail app, the notification keeps popping up on my Ticwatch E like I'm just receiving it for the first time, vibration and all. It's extremely annoying. I haven't paid enough attention to figure out the frequency of the extra notifications, but the only way to stop is swiping away the email which sometimes I don't like to do to keep the notification as a reminder. I'm using a Galaxy S8+, I noticed this didn't really start until after I updated to Oreo. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Malik,

The notification on your watch often mimics the notification on the phone.  Does your phone notification repeat multiple times as well or do you only notice this behavior from the watch?  Do any other apps do this as well or is it just Gmail?

Also, just to confirm, you are using an Android Wear watch?  What type of watch are you using?

Hi, yes I am using a Ticwatch E running Wear OS 2.0 and a Galaxy S8+ on Oreo. I only notice this behavior from Gmail. On my phone, I'll see the new background activity notifications Oreo introduced (i.e. when Gmail turns on in the background to look for new emails) but the actual email notifications don't pop up multiple times on my phone like they just came in.

Hey Malik,

I have a suspicion that the notification issues you are having are directly tied to the Gmail app on your phone.  Let's try changing some of those settings and see if it makes a difference.  Open the Gmail app on your phone -> open the side menu (three horizontal lines in top left) -> scroll to the bottom and select settings -> select the Gmail account that you use -> leave the notifications box checked -> select inbox notifications -> uncheck the box that says notify for every message -> close the app and restart both your phone and watch.  Test that out for a bit and let me know if it makes any difference!

I went to look at my notification settings like you mentioned. I have a Gmail and two Hotmail accounts linked to the app. The Gmail account was already set like you specified, and the two Hotmail accounts lacked the settings for me to choose.

Five days ago, my Galaxy S7 was upgraded to Oreo by Verizon. Since then I have the same problem. The notifications come from a non-gmail email account. In the settings for that account, there is no "notify only once" check box. Any help would be great appreciated. As Mailk said, it's really annoying.

Agreed. The only solution I found was to just block Gmail from sending notifications to my watch, because it was so annoying I contemplated just not wearing my watch at all. If anyone has any other suggestions, they'd be greatly appreciated.

I did not show these in my settings for my Gmail app:

leave the notifications box checked -> select inbox notifications -> uncheck the box that says notify for every message -> close the app and restart both your phone and watch.

I have the same issue. Using:
  • Moto 360 watch with latest updates to "Android Wear 2.17; Android OS 7.1.1"
  • Moto Z Force Droid with latest updates to "Android version 8.0.0" (Oreo)
  • Gmail app with latest updates to version 8.11.4.xxx...
  • Two additional non-Gmail email accounts connected
The watch vibration does seem to correspond to the silent notification on the phone that it is syncing mail in the background. Obviously that notification should not trigger a vibration on the watch as it does not trigger the vibration on the phone when the watch is disconnected. Ideally, watch notifications would mirror the behavior of phone notifications.

I also have the same issue. Gmail app connected to one gmail and one non-gmail account.
I can also mention that the behavior that I have seen is that it I have, let's say, 5 new mails on my non gmail account, they all notify me when they arrive. I then go to my computer and read one of the mails. The other 4 is then sending notifications on my watch again. So unless I sweep all notifications from my watch, they will show up over and over again, making the watch vibrate. Really annoying.

Same issue and no watch involved. Repeated notifications for the same email even after it's been deleted - like 30 to 40 minutes apart; notification after notification for the same email. Sometimes the email is 100+ days old. WTF
Seriously has me rethinking using Gmail. EXTREMELY annoying and disruptive. And I'm using a Google phone (Pixel 3A) on latest Android 10. This really sucks!!!!

Has anyone found a cure for this mess?
