Can I use Google Pay on a Wear OS watch if my phone is not nearby? 2 Recommended Answers 14 Replies 10 Upvotes

I just want to know if I can use Google Pay on a Wear OS (with NFC) watch if my phone is not nearby. Assume that I already have payment cards set up on my watch. For example, if I left my phone at home, and I am in the store, can I still use just my Wear OS watch to make purchases?

Hi Jon,

Yes, you can use Google Pay "standalone" on a Wear OS watch without needing to have your phone nearby, though I'm pretty sure that requires a cellular-enabled watch with an active data connection.

John

I see. Well, I was kind of hoping I would be able to use Google Pay on a Wear OS watch without requiring cellular capability on the watch. I don't have a smart watch yet (just researching), but found that an Apple Watch (without cellular, and without an iPhone nearby) can still use Apple Pay for store (contactless/NFC) purchases. That's ok. Thank you for your reply.

Hey Jon,

I've been trying to find an opportunity to test this to confirm, but my bank is apparently having Google Pay issues at the moment.

In the meantime, I found this thread at r/WearOS which includes this note:
  • Google Pay does not require an active internet connection to pay (NFC-equipped watches only).

So it sounds like my previous response was mistaken - it should work on any NFC-equipped watch regardless of connection status.

Cheers,
John

First, I have to say thank you for your time on my question. I really do appreciate it, and I apologize if I seem somewhat pedantic on this question. It's just that I have received some conflicting answers from multiple sources on this question. Many of the answers I have seen so far simply state that the watch has to have NFC. That part I agree with. The differing responses have to do with making a watch payment at a store (and this is the sticking point) *while my phone is at home*. I have heard many people tell me that WearOS watches (with NFC) can be used to make payments at a store *only if* the phone is in close proximity, like in a pocket, backpack, etc.  Some have said that it depends on the watch. Thanks again.

Hi Jerry,

Hard to say. You might want to reach out to Google Pay support to see if they can check into this:
