Learn About Waze
What is Waze?
Waze is the world's largest community-based traffic and navigation app, with 100 million global users.
How does it work?
Waze’s core functionality is the ability to navigate users based on information crowdsourced from:
- Users: After typing in their destination address, users just drive with the app open on their phone to passively contribute traffic and other road data. Waze users are also able to actively report a multitude of traffic-related incidents. Waze uses all of this data to help other users, either by alerting them to conditions ahead, or by rerouting them to avoid an area entirely.
Editors: In addition to using crowdsourced information for traffic alerts, Waze allows registered users (called editors) to modify the map data through the Waze Map Editor. Map editors are allowed to make changes to the map based on where they have driven while using Waze, as well as their rank, which is based on how many map edits a user has made.
Partners: Finally, Waze also relies on information provided by a broad range of partners, from state agencies (regarding traffic events, such as road construction) to municipalities and government institutions.
By connecting drivers with one another, Waze helps people create local driving communities that work together to improve the quality of everyone's daily driving. This might mean helping them avoid the frustration of sitting in traffic, or shaving five minutes off of their regular commute by showing them new routes they’ve never explored.
