Avoid toll roads, ferries, and freeways

Set your navigation preferences to avoid toll roads, ferries, and freeways. You can also set your preferences to avoid high-occupancy vehicle lanes (HOV).

Note: Waze may sometimes suggest routes that include toll roads, freeways, and ferries when this feature is turned on, depending on the routes available at the time you're driving.

1. Open Waze
2. Tap
3. Tap Settings
4. Tap Navigation
5. Turn on the options you prefer:
   • Avoid toll roads
   • Avoid ferries
   • Avoid freeways
     Note: You can turn off these options if you prefer.

Set your preferences before your drive

You can adjust your settings for upcoming drives. Note that any changes you make are automatically applied to future drives.

2. Search for your destination
3. Tap View routes if you're navigating to a destination that's not a recent location
4. Tap Avoid on the top-left corner
5. Turn on Avoid toll roads
6. Tap View all navigation settings
7. Turn on the options you prefer:
   • Avoid ferries
   • Avoid freeways
     Note: You can turn off these options if you prefer.

How does avoiding toll roads affect my route?

If you set Waze to avoid toll roads, your first option for a route should be toll-free – unless that's the only route available. If a route includes a toll road, you'll see an icon with the toll amount on the Routes screen.
