Connect Waze to your GPS

Waze uses your device's GPS to know your location. Before navigating, make sure your device's location settings are turned on.  

On Android

Important: Some of these steps work only on Android 10 and up. Learn how to check your Android version.

Turn location on for your phone

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen. 
  2. Touch and hold Location . If you don't find Location :
    1. Tap Edit  or Settings .
    2. Drag Location  into your Quick Settings.

Tip: If these steps don’t work for you, get help from your device manufacturer.

Allow the Waze app to use your phone’s location

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen. 
  2. Touch and hold Location . If you don't find Location :
    1. Tap Edit  or Settings . Then drag Location  into your Quick Settings.
  3. Tap App permission.
  4. Under ”Allowed all the time," “Allowed only while in use,” and “Ask every time,” find the apps that can use your phone's location.
  5. To change the app's permissions, tap it, then choose the location access for the app. Learn about app permissions.

Note: If you are using Android 8.1 and below, please make sure to tap Mode, and then pick High accuracy. For more instructions about Android location management, please click here

On iOS

Under Settings > Privacy, make sure Location Services for Waze are turned to Always or While Using the App. Learn more here.

If you still see the error message:

  1. Open Settings > Privacy > Location Services and toggle the switch off
  2. Restart your iPhone. Read this article for instructions.
  3. Go back to Settings > Privacy > Location Services and toggle the switch on.

If the above steps don't resolve the issue, log out from your Waze account and log in again. 

TIP: Before you log out, make sure you've added an email to your Waze account so that you can reset your password, if needed.
  • Tap Search, and then Settings
  • Tap Account & Login 
  • Tap Log out

If Waze is still unable to get a GPS signal, we recommend that you contact your local cellular provider/device manufacturer in order to check the GPS component on your device. Checking other location based apps can be a good way to see if the issue is with Waze or with your device/OS.
