Charging tax

You are solely responsible for specifying your own tax rates. If tax rates for your location change, you are also responsible for updating the tax rates buyers are charged. If you don't specify any tax information, Google Payments will not apply taxes to your orders. If you need tax assistance, please consult with a qualified tax professional.

Tax setup via the Merchant Center

You can set tax rates in the Merchant Center with Google Wallet for digital goods and services. Here's how:

  1. Sign in to Google Payments.
  2. Click the Settings tab.
  3. Click Tax setup.
  4. Select Add your tax settings.
  5. Choose how you will calculate tax from the options displayed.
  6. Follow the instructions in the setup wizard.
  7. Repeat these steps for each state and tax rate you'd like to specify.

Our tax setup tool allows you to calculate tax rates based on the buyer’s zip code. To access the tool:

  1. Sign in to Google Payments.
  2. Click the Settings tab.
  3. Click Tax setup.
  4. Select Using Tax Data Systems data (based on ZIP Code) and select which locations you charge tax in.
  5. Specify if you would like to charge tax on shipping.
  6. Click Save.

Please note that tax rate data is provided by a third party, Tax Data Systems (TDS), so Google cannot guarantee the accuracy of these rates. Learn more by visiting the Tax Data Systems website. The tax rates you specify will be applied automatically when the buyer completes the checkout process.
