Send money using Messages on iPhone

If you use the Messages app on your iPhone, you can send money to any Messages contact or US phone number with Google Wallet. Wallet is free to use.

Note: This feature is only available in the US.

Set up Google Wallet for Messages

Note: If you have the latest Wallet app installed on your device, you’ll already be able to send money over Messages.

Step 1: Make sure the Wallet app is installed

  1. On your iPhone, open the Messages app.
  2. Open a message.
  3. At the bottom, tap the App Store icon that looks like the letter "A."
  4. In the bottom left corner, tap the four circles and then Store.
  5. In top left corner, tap Search and search for "Google Wallet."
  6. Choose Google Wallet.
  7. Tap Get.
  8. Once Wallet is installed, tap Open and then Sign in.
  9. Choose the Google Account you want to sign in with.

Step 2: Turn on Wallet for Messages

  1. On your iPhone, open the Messages app.
  2. Open a message.
  3. At the bottom, tap the App Store icon that looks like the letter "A."
  4. In the bottom left, tap the four circles and then Store.
  5. At the top, tap Manage.
  6. Switch "Wallet" on, then tap Done.

Send money

Note: You can use Messages to send money to anyone with a valid US phone number. The contact doesn’t have to be using an iPhone.

  1. In the Messages app, choose the Messages contact or US phone number you want to send money to.
  2. Tap the App Store icon.
  3. In the bottom left corner, tap the four circles and then Wallet.
  4. Tap Send money.
  5. Enter the amount you want to send.
  6. Choose a payment method. If you’ve never used Wallet before, follow the instructions to add a new payment method.
  7. Tap Attach money.

Claim money sent to you in messages

  1. Open the message with money attached.
  2. Tap the Wallet message to claim the money.
    • If you haven’t installed Wallet on your iPhone or iPad, you’ll be taken to the App Store listing where you can download the app.
  3. Tap Transfer money.
    • If you’ve never used Wallet before, tap Add debit card and follow the instructions.
  4. Choose the payment method you want to use to claim your money.
