You can safely and securely save and use your digital residential keys in Google Wallet. With strong encryption and enhanced controls, you can unlock your home or apartment with a simple tap of your smartphone or wearable.

Digital Keys Issued and Controlled by Property Manager

Add a digital key

Important: If you have multiple properties in the same building, you can use one digital key to access them. Contact your property manager to set up multiple units on one key.

  1. Open the property management website, app, or email.
  2. If required, sign in to the property management website.
  3. Tap Add to Google Wallet.
    Tip: This button is typically on the confirmation page from the property management’s website, app, or email. If you can’t find it, the property may not support this feature. For more details, contact the property management.
  4. Sign in to your Google Account associated with your Google Wallet.
  5. Tap Add and then View in Wallet.

You can now find your digital residential key and access details in Google Wallet.

Use a digital key

Important: Your digital key isn't a replacement for your physical key. Keep your physical key with you as a backup.

  1. Wake and unlock your phone.
    Tip: You can also use your digital keys without the need to unlock your phone once you adjust the setting. Learn how to manage your device unlock settings.
  2. Hold the back of your phone near the reader.

  1. Open the Google Wallet app .
  2. Tap the digital key that you want to use.
  3. At the top right, tap More More.
  4. Turn on or off Require device unlock to use.

With the device unlock setting off, you don’t need to unlock your phone.

To use your digital key:

  1. Wake your phone.
  2. Hold the back of your phone near the reader.

Remove a digital key

Important:

  • When you manually remove a key from one device, it doesn’t remove it from the other device. So, if you remove a key from a phone, it doesn't automatically delete it from the watch. If you want to remove the digital key to all your devices, you must manually remove it from each device.
  • When you factory reset your phone or erase a device remotely, your existing digital keys are removed and you'll need to add it again.
  • Removing a digital key doesn’t disable it. The property manager can disable the digital key. Learn how to disable a digital key.
  1. Open the Google Wallet app .
  2. Tap the digital key that you want to remove.
  3. At the top right, tap More More.
  4. Scroll to the bottom.
  5. Tap Remove key and then Remove.

Disable a digital key

Important: Google has no control or responsibility with respect to the digital key's activation or deactivation. Only your property manager can activate or deactivate your digital key. Keep your physical key with you as a backup.

The property manager can disable the digital key. Contact the property management for issues related to disabling or activating.

Fix issues with digital keys

I can’t use my digital key or fix issues with a digital key

If you’re having trouble with your digital key:

  1. Make sure your phone is NFC enabled.
    Tip: To turn on NFC, check your phone settings. Learn about how to turn on NFC on your phone.
  2. Hold your phone closer to the card reader for a few seconds, avoid moving it away too quickly.
    • Try to hold your phone in a different way. Your NFC antenna could be near the top or bottom of your device.

If you're still having issues, contact the property management.

I tried to add my key, but it says it’s already added

If you’re having trouble with your digital key:

  1. Check if the digital key is not already available in Google Wallet.
  2. If it’s not a duplicate, make sure your phone is NFC enabled.
    Tip: To turn on NFC, check your phone settings. Learn about how to turn on NFC on your phone.
  3. Hold your phone closer to the card reader for a few seconds, avoid moving it away too quickly.
    • Try to hold your phone in a different way. Your NFC antenna could be near the top or bottom of your device.
  4. If you’re still having issues, contact your property management for assistance.
Can I share my digital key with a guest?
Digital key sharing is not supported in Google wallet.
