Save your Student ID to Google Wallet

Important: Student IDs are currently supported in these countries. To find out if your college or university supports Student IDs with Google Wallet, contact your campus card office.

You can add your Student ID card to your Android phone to securely access your residence hall or other supported buildings. You can also use your Student ID with Google Wallet to pay for items or services on campus such as dining, laundry, vending machines, and books.

To use your Student ID with Google Wallet, you need:

Add your Student ID to Google Wallet

  1. Sign in to your school account with your username and password.
  2. Tap Add to Google Wallet or Save to Google Pay.
    • If you don’t have the Google Wallet app, download it to continue.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Tip: If you can't add your Student ID, you may need to update your Google Play services.

Access your Student ID

  1. Open the Google Wallet app .
  2. Scroll to find your Student ID.
  3. Tap your Student ID.

If your university supports these features, you can find your account balances and meal plan info. At the bottom, you can find your Student ID number, and your contact and support info.

Use your Student ID across Google

You can use info from your Student ID in other Google services. You can get updates and notifications, and find your ID in Shopping, Assistant, and more.

  1. Open the Google Wallet app .
  2. Scroll to find your Student ID.
  3. Tap your Student ID.
  4. At the bottom, find “Use ID card across Google” and turn this setting on or off.

Use your phone to access buildings & make payments

Important: For a list of locations that accept mobile Student IDs with Google Wallet, consult your campus card office.

After you add your Student ID to Google Wallet, you can use your phone for building access and to pay for items or services around campus.

  1. Wake up your phone. You don't need to unlock it.
  2. Hold it to a card reader until you get a blue check mark on your screen.

Require unlock to use your Student ID

For added security, you can set up your phone so that it must be unlocked to use your Campus ID at a terminal or card reader.

  1. Open the Google Wallet app .
  2. Scroll to find your Student ID.
  3. Tap your Student ID.
  4. In the section, "Require device unlock for use", turn this option on.

If you don't see this option on your phone, you can still require unlock via the Settings menu. This will require that your phone be unlocked for all NFC transactions, not just your Student ID.

  1. Go to Settings Settings.
  2. Tap Connected devices and then Connection preferences and then NFC.
  3. Turn on Require device unlock for NFC.

If you can’t find this option, you may need to update your phone to the latest version of Android.

Find your balance or add money to your Student ID

To find and manage your account balance on your Student ID, sign in to the app that your school uses. If you need more help, contact your campus card office.

Fix problems with your Student ID

Important: Steps may change based on your device and Android version. If the steps below don’t work, go to your device manufacturer help center.

You get an error message when you try to add your Student ID
Tip: If your phone is rooted, or "jailbroken," runs a custom ROM, or has modified factory software, Google Wallet won't work due to security risks.

Update your Google Play services

Often, an error when you try to add your Student ID can be fixed if you update Play services on your phone.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open Settings .
  2. Tap Apps & notifications and then See all apps.
  3. Scroll and tap Google Play Services.
  4. Scroll and tap App Details.
  5. Tap Update or Install. If those options aren't available, then your Google Play services are up to date.

Tip: If you can't find Google Play services, open Settings . At the top, search for Google Play services.

You can't pay with your Student ID on Google Wallet or access your dorm or cafeteria

To make contactless payments, your phone must have NFC. To check if your phone has NFC, go to Settings . At the top, search for "NFC."

  • If you don’t get results, your phone doesn’t have NFC and can’t make contactless payments.
  • If you get results, your phone has NFC.

Next, check that your phone has NFC turned on:

  1. On your Android phone, open Settings .
  2. Tap Connected devices and then Connection preferences and then NFC.
  3. Turn on NFC.

Tip: Check that you followed the setup steps and make sure your phone is awake and close to the reader. If it still doesn’t work, contact your campus card office for help. To make sure it's valid, you can also check your ID status in the app that your school uses.

You want to remove a Student ID
  1. Open the Google Wallet app .
  2. Scroll to find your Student ID.
  3. Tap your Student ID.
  4. In the top right, tap More More and then Remove card and then Remove.

Tip: You can also remove your Student ID through your school account.

You want to transfer your Student ID to a new phone

Step 1: Remove your Student ID from your current phone

  1. Open the Google Wallet app .
  2. Scroll to find your Student ID.
  3. Tap your Student ID.
  4. In the top right, tap More More and then Remove card.

Step 2: Set up your Student ID on your new phone

  1. Sign in to your school account with your username and password.
  2. Tap Add to Google Wallet.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. On your new device, open the Google Wallet app .
  5. Scroll to find your Student ID.
  6. Tap your Student ID.
Your phone is lost or stolen

If your phone is lost or stolen, immediately remove your Student ID from Google Wallet through your school account. After you find your device or get a new one, you can re-enable your Student ID.

Your Student ID is suspended

If you suspended your own ID, you can unsuspend it in the app your school uses. If someone else suspended your ID, contact your university’s card office.

You have an international phone

Student IDs are currently only supported for devices bought in the US, Canada, and Australia. Support for international devices is coming soon.
