How can I instantly know if an incoming call is to my iPhone # or to my linked Google Voice #? 1 Recommended Answer 16 Replies 243 Upvotes

I would like direct calls to my iPhone have a different ringtone or other identifier to differentiate them from calls to my Google Voice number that is linked to my iPhone. I want to answer each of the two types of calls with a different greeting.  I haven't found any instructions or YouTube videos that address this question.

Hi Clark, welcome to the forum and thanks for asking.

You have a couple of options to identify whether the call is coming through Google Voice or not.
  1. Enable Call Screening in the Settings menu of either the web page, or in the Google Voice app.  This will announce the name of the caller and require you to press 1 to answer, or press 2 to send to voicemail.  Any callers in your Google Contacts, or businesses known by Google will be announced using text-to-speech.  Any callers not in your Contacts, or businesses known by Google will be prompted to state their name, so you know who is calling.
  2. Set up your incoming Caller-ID to either show the caller, which will happen when someone calls your cellular number, or show your Google Voice number if they are calling your Google Voice line.
If you'd like to change the Caller-ID of incoming calls to show your Google Voice number, instead of the person calling to help differentiate which calls are being made directly to your personal line, and which are being made to your Google Voice number, you can set that up in the Legacy Google Voice interface.  To access this setting directly, visit the following web page:

The following image shows where you can change this.

To show your Google Voice number as Caller-ID, you'd select "Display my Google Voice number."

If you'd like to revert back to showing the caller's Caller-ID, just select "Display caller's number."

Hope this information helps.  Let me know if you have any further questions.

Now that the Google Voice app on Android has inbuilt VoIP support (no longer needing Hangouts), there is a new option to know which number/service is receiving the call. Within the app, set your Google Voice account to "Prefer Wi-Fi and mobile data" under "Make and receive calls." Note, this makes incoming calls, and outgoing calls placed from within the app itself, Internet calls using Wi-Fi or cellular data, and not cellular voice calls.

This causes incoming calls to open Google Voice's own interface to answer/reject the call instead of forwarding the call to your carrier number.

Calls to your carrier number should still open in the Phone app interface.

Unfortunately, when receiving a call in the Google Voice app, it doesn't indicate which Google Voice account the calls are coming into, so if you have multiple accounts, you have a similar problem.

I'm having trouble receiving calls through my google voice, this is the number on my business cards. I'm missing business calls because of this. Can I take my google phone number to another cell phone?

Noooooo.  In the event that I can not look at my cell phone, is there a way to change the type of ring so I know it's an super important call to my cell itself, or is the call from the Google voice number.  Do you understand what many of us mean?

I've noticed that if you're in a call using the VOIP option and you press the displays back button when on the dialer screen the dialer disappears and there is not way to hang up on the call.   Has anyone else run into this.    Anyone know how to retrieve the active dialer?
