How can I instantly know if an incoming call is to my iPhone # or to my linked Google Voice #?

I would like direct calls to my iPhone have a different ringtone or other identifier to differentiate them from calls to my Google Voice number that is linked to my iPhone. I want to answer each of the two types of calls with a different greeting.  I haven't found any instructions or YouTube videos that address this question.

Let's try to not post in a thread that is 3 months old, and create a new thread for individual help.  This way we don't bother the original poster of this thread with notifications that new posts have been made.

The option is still available to show your Google Voice number as Caller-ID, I just checked it myself.

To the people that don't see it, you are probably logged into the wrong account

Make sure you log out of all Google accounts on your browser, and try logging into the correct one.  Google Voice does not always show the right page, when you have multiple accounts logged in.  You can also open an incognito, or private browser (depending on if you are using ChromeControl-Shift-N ], FirefoxControl-Shift-P ], or SafariCommand-Shift-N ]) and log into the correct account there.

Do this, and then open Google Voice again.

If you need to determine which account your Google Voice number is attached to, you can visit the following web page, and put in your number.  It will reply with a hint of which account it is tied to, and send you an email to that account.  You may need to check your various accounts (including Spam folder) for the email.

Hi Clark, welcome to the forum and thanks for asking.

You have a couple of options to identify whether the call is coming through Google Voice or not.
  1. Enable Call Screening in the Settings menu of either the web page, or in the Google Voice app.  This will announce the name of the caller and require you to press 1 to answer, or press 2 to send to voicemail.  Any callers in your Google Contacts, or businesses known by Google will be announced using text-to-speech.  Any callers not in your Contacts, or businesses known by Google will be prompted to state their name, so you know who is calling.
  2. Set up your incoming Caller-ID to either show the caller, which will happen when someone calls your cellular number, or show your Google Voice number if they are calling your Google Voice line.
If you'd like to change the Caller-ID of incoming calls to show your Google Voice number, instead of the person calling to help differentiate which calls are being made directly to your personal line, and which are being made to your Google Voice number, you can set that up in the Legacy Google Voice interface.  To access this setting directly, visit the following web page:

The following image shows where you can change this.

To show your Google Voice number as Caller-ID, you'd select "Display my Google Voice number."

If you'd like to revert back to showing the caller's Caller-ID, just select "Display caller's number."

Hope this information helps.  Let me know if you have any further questions.

UPDATE:
1. I changed to "Wifi and Data" like Shane's post above under "make and receive calls" in the voice app. It opens my app to accept calls
2. I removed my personal # from the app, I just now have it set the voice number to be attached to my device. (It doesn't forward to my personal #). If you don't, it like double calls your device.
3. At this point, the calls will now come through your app, and it will say "Voice Audio" instead of "mobile". You can also call back the caller directly from your iphone's call log, as it will just open the voice app and call through there anyways w/ your google #.

You can use the below steps if you still want it to forward to your actual carrier phone number... and have a specific ringtone set. I personally still have the Google Voice incoming calls named "Work Call" just to keep work and personal calls "separated" in my log. I think it's definitely not necessary.
**********

So, what I did (for now, unless there is a better way...) is:

  1. Select "Display my Google Voice number" under Caller ID (Incoming) -- like the screenshot above
  2. Save my google number as "Work Call" (or whatever you want) in my personal phone contacts*
  3. Set the ringtone for that "Work Call" contact to a different tone
Whenever someone calls my Google Voice number, it will show me "Work Call" and ring with a different tone. HOWEVER, the phone number of the caller won't be saved in your phone's call log, BUT it will show up in the call log in your Google Voice app -- if that makes sense.

So, if you need the caller's phone number, you will need to go to the app as it will only show "Work Call" in your personal recent call list.

This is a pretty roundabout way of doing it, but I can't really think of anything else. I don't think google voice has a way of just telling us iphone users which # is being called (work or personal) yet.

*I changed it to "Work call" because I can't really be bothered to have my google # memorized to the point where I can immediately recognize it when I get the call.

Does anyone else not show the same options as the screen capture above? I see no options for incoming caller ID. All mine shows is "billing" and "account", even when I go to legacy. Plus, the "prefer wi-fi and data" option didn't change anything on my phone. I still get the same calls with no indication which line is being called. Did they change it that recently? This post is only a few weeks old.

I also don't have these settings

Same here. Looks like they changed things but didn't update the support. I have no idea how to set this feature.

I also do not see an option for "Display My Google Voice Number".  Not sure how to proceed here....

When my linked device (Cell phone) rings - it doesn't show that it is an incoming call to my google voice number. How do I know if it's google voice or just someone calling me on my cell? I have iphone with software version 11. Is there a way to change the type of ring so I know it's an super important call to my cell itself, or is the call from the Google voice number.

Bart, as posted above.  Start a new thread.

I tried all of the suggestions listed above. The option is still not there.

I just switched to Google Voice for business, and I'm trying to set this up for me and the other people in my office. However, there seems to be no option to do this in the new interface, and when I click on the link provided above, instead of going to the legacy interface, I'm... directed to the new interface, where I'm not able to do this. Why in the world would they remove this important functionality?!?

To say this is frustrating is an understatement. Fortunately, we haven't switched from our old voice solution. Looks like we won't be switching.

Zanzibar and Shane Reichart provided 2 ways that I think work, at least as far as getting your phone to display your own GV number as the incoming phone number, but neither method also allows for creating a unique ringtone (at least I didn't see it mentioned).

The method I used to fix the problem was to create a contact in my phone's contact list for my GV number, using "CM's Business - Incoming Call" as the name. I used my GV number for this contact.  I also added a photo that represented my business and used a unique ringtone that is different from my standard cell phone ringtone.  Now, when my GV number is called, I hear the unique ringtone and "CM's Business - Incoming Call" appears in the phone display.

The downside is that I can't see the callers name or phone number, but its a small price to pay to be able to differentiate my personal incoming calls from my business calls and to be able to answer the phone with an appropriate greeting instead of "Hello".

To (hopefully) cut down on SPAM calls to my GV number, I also turned on filtering in the settings menu.  I did NOT implement the "Prefer WIFI and mobile data" option. I left it set to "Use Carrier Only".  I didn't try it with "Prefer Wifi.....". It might work the same as "Use Carrier Only".  I didn't test it.  I also turned OFF call screening in the GV app, since it became an added step that served no purpose.  I already knew the call was a GV call since the ringtone was different and the Caller ID popped up with my business name and photo.

As a side note, I think my solution would also work if you have multiple google Voice accounts that all point to the same cell phone number. Add each unique GV number to your contact list with a unique name and ringtone. You will know instantly which account is being used for the incoming call.  I haven't tried it, but it theoretically should work.

I've noticed that if you're in a call using the VOIP option and you press the displays back button when on the dialer screen the dialer disappears and there is not way to hang up on the call.   Has anyone else run into this.    Anyone know how to retrieve the active dialer?
