Sending Faxes through Google Voice
3
I need to occasionally SEND a fax and have neither a landline nor a fax machine.  I have a cell phone but mainly use Google Voice through a PC.

I'm aware that there are a number of services that operate fax servers.  On those occasions when I do need to send a fax it usually contains confidential information and I don't want to send it via email or have anyone storing it on their servers.

Is anyone aware of a way to SEND a fax over a Google Voice connection?

I found a thread that talked about this very thing, but it's from 2009 and I was hoping to find an in-depth discussion on this that was much more recent:

"Outbound FAX Through Google Voice"
2009.03.31

I HAVE:
  • Several desktops & laptops running Windows 10
  • Several older PCs on which I could potentially run another OS (e.g. Linux)
  • A scanner
  • An Android smartphone
  • A fast Internet connection (FiOS)
  • Google Voice, which I use on my WIndows PCs and occasionally my Android phone
  • A need to occasionally SEND a fax.

I do NOT have:
  • A landline
  • A fax machine
  • A desire to spend money, especially on something I will only use occasionally.
  • A need to RECEIVE faxes.

Given all the equipment you have, you can simply scan the document and email it to the recipient, or go to FedEx Kinko's or the UPS Store and use their fax equipment.

Thanks, but on the receiving end they won't accept the document via email.  (Do you think I'd be faxing if the other party was willing to accept the document via email?  Give me some credit.)

I do already scan all my documents and save them to my PC.  Faxing something requires printing out said document and driving to one of the stores you mentioned.  Waste of paper, time, and money.

I've already got the documents stored on my PC, usually as PDF files.  I've got an Internet connection and Google Voice gives me the ability to dial someone's fax machine, which happens accidentally sometimes.  It seems to me the only piece that is missing is a program to speak fax with a fax machine on the other end.  Or, am I missing something...?

You asked ..."am I missing something...?"...

You missed the fact that Google Voice doesn't work with fax

Last September I could not send a fax out on my Google Voice phone line - constant errors.
Made no difference whether I put a page on the plate of my printer-fax machine and tried to fax it from there or "printed" directly from my PC to the fax line, with both my printer-fax machine and my PC connected to my GV voice line.
But now it works.
Any idea why?
Thanks to Patrick Chadwick above for his links to FaxZero.com (inbound) and FaxToy.net (outbound)- very helpful for test purposes.
