I am joining the Peace Corps and will be leaving the US for 27 months.  I wanted to save my phone number so that I could use it again when I return from volunteering.  Someone recommended that I port my number into Google Voice.  I do not plan on using this number at all while I am out of the country, but I saw that Google Voice is for only in the US.

Will I lose the number from not using it for 27 months?

Are there any fees associated with this besides the $20 to port?

Will my being outside of the US be an issue?

Would you recommend using Google voice this way (to hold a number while it is not being used)?

Hi Laura:  thanks for your Peace Corps service!
Google Voice is not a number-parking service.  There is no guarantee that your number will be preserved over that entire time period if it is not used at all.
I suggest instead porting it to an Internet Telephone Service Provider (ITSP) that has pay-per minute calling plans.  You can either use the number for calling, or simply ignore it, during that time period.  There is a small monthly fee.   I recommend two companies; both have been in business a long time, are reliable, and low-cost:  Voip.ms and Callcentric.com will both port in numbers and then charge only a monthly fee to host the numbers.  Callcentric's monthly rate is higher, but it has no port-in fee.
