Ported Gvoice number is still sending old linked phone number calls to Gvoice 0 Recommended Answers 5 Replies 0 Upvotes

I unlinked all of my devices in my Gvoice which includes my personal cell phone.  However, anyone calling my personal cell phone number gets redirected to Gvoice, which then gets directed to my business line.  Since I'm trying to keep my personal and business voicemails separate, this is frustrating, since Gvoice should not be linked to my persona cell phone number anymore.

Welcome to the forum.

You said ..." anyone calling my personal cell phone number gets redirected to Gvoice,"...

This is because call forwarding is activated on your mobile device.
As the name implies, call forwarding forwards calls.

Deactivate call forwarding.

The condescension in the reply is unkind.  Also, no such settings in my mobile device (Pixel 3) were turned on.  If that had been the case the problem should have been resolved when I purchased my current phone, and the problem existed prior to the current mobile device.  I had turned on Gvoice's call forwarding a long while ago when I wanted to use it to receive calls, but I unlinked my personal cell number in the Legacy Settings, so it shouldn't be able to forward anything since no number is linked to it.  This is my understanding of how the Gvoice's system worked, regardless of the mobile device.

You need to contact your carrier to ask them how to disable call forwarding.  It is not something on the phone's side, but on the carrier side.

I provided information about what was happening and the solution.

I will try to break it down further

This is not an issue with Google Voice forwarding calls to your phone.

In your first post You said ..."anyone calling my personal cell phone number gets redirected to Gvoice"...
That means that your phone is forwarding calls to Google Voice.
During the setup process, Google Voice provided the instructions to forward (redirect) your unanswered calls to Google Voicemail.
Removing the linked number does not deactivate the call forwarding because that was activated at the carrier level by you through a sequence of digits followed with the Google Voice number.

Google also provides the instructions to deactivate the call forwarding but those instructions vanish when the linked number is removed from the account.

If you don't know how to deactivate call forwarding, you can contact your provider as Zanzabar suggested to learn how you can deactivate the call forwarding or tell me who your provider is and I will look it up and pass it on to you.

Here is a screenshot of your post:

This is the crux of your misunderstanding.
  • There are two opposing directions of call forwarding:
    1. From your Google Voice number to your linked devices.  This is performed by Google Voice.
    2. From a linked phone number back to your Google Voice phone number.  This is performed by your mobile carrier's network.
  • You are confusing #2 with #1.
    1. Yes, you did disable #1 by deleting your cell phone number from the list of linked devices
    2. No, you did not disable #2, because your carrier's call forwarding is performed by the carrier's network, not by your Pixel handset.
Disable the previously-programmed carrier call forwarding.  As Red said, either contact your carrier, or simply tell us which carrier you are using, and one of us will tell you how to disable it.
