E-mailed copies of incoming texts are delayed 0 Recommended Answers 12 Replies 5 Upvotes

Lately, the emailed copies of many of my incoming Google Voice SMS/text messages are being delayed by hours or days, frequently arriving out of sequence. I get my incoming texts immediately in the Android app and in the web UI, but only about 20% of them are coming to email right away. The rest are delayed by minutes, hours, or even days, and they often come out of order. There is nothing wrong with my email in general; this appears to be a delay in the transmission of the forwarded messages, not in the receipt.

Any advice? Is anyone else having this issue?

Delayed email of voice messages -- happens with my Voice account intermittently.  Some days messages arrive very quickly.  Other days messages arrive in my email inbox many hours after the phone caller recorded his/her message.  VERY IRRITATING.  Have not figured out why it happens or how to fix the issue.

Yes -- also having this issue. I am considering changing the email address used to receive messages, in case that might make a difference ...

This continues to be a huge problem. Almost all incoming SMS messages are delayed before being forwarded to email, often by several days.

My main reason for using GV for texting is so I have an email copy of my incoming message and so I still get message when I am at my desk and away from my phone.

Any response from Google engineers about whether this problem is being worked on?

Hi Jon 9999

If you are are using a personal Google Voice Account, forwarding to your personal default gmail account then:
If you are an Enterprise Google Voice user (G Suite - GV supplied by your work) then you should reach out to your Enterprise Admin for support. For reference, here's the link to the GSuite Help Forum as well.

If you are using a business email address (domain account) then first use this help page:  Manage your business email settings  They also provide a "Contact Us" link (top right)  to help with your business email account.

@baldybeardedguy,

Thanks.

1) The response from freecarrierlookup.com said this:
Carrier:
Bandwidth.com

Is Wireless:
n
(Can you please explain what Bandwidth.com is? Why doesn't it say Google?)

2) The account recovery page told me it was sending me an email message, and it looked like it was my correct email address (although much of it was replaced with * characters, of course), but I've waited 5 minutes and the message hasn't arrived yet to either my Gmail inbox or my spam folder.

Hi Jon 9999

If you have not received the email, make sure you are looking at the correct account.
Bandwidth is the correct response for the Google Voice carrier..

@baldybeardedguy,

Definitely the correct account. I put in my GV phone number, and it displayed the correct email address that the number is under (albeit with much of the address changed to * characters). I'm 100% certain that it's the correct account.

I tried another GV account that I have under a different Gmail address, and the recovery email arrived right away. This problem appears to be specific to my primary account -- the same account that I'm using to post this Help Forum message, the same account that is receiving SMS-to-email messages days later (and out of order), and the same account that isn't getting the recovery email when I request it.

Hi Jon 9999

Please open Chrome incognito [Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+N] mode.
  1. Then open Google Voice (https://voice.google.com/) log into your Google Voice account that's having issues.
  2. What page do you see?
  3. Then try to put your Google Voice number into https://www.google.com/voice/account/recovery and confirm you receive the email from Google.
If you do still not get the email, and you are sure you are checking the correct Gmail, you need to have someone check out your account. Review the Accounts help page, and check the Account community forum: https://support.google.com/accounts#topic=3382296

Also check in the Gmail Community Forum which is where you would have to go to determine that your email account is not causing this issue with the delay.

@baldybeardedguy,

This is important:  The emailed copy of incoming GV voicemails arrive right away, to the same email account. This is just an SMS/text problem, very specifically.

Even though I can't see how this is an email problem or an account problem, here are the results of your last request:  I see the "Hi Jon!" phone calls page of my Google Voice account. The account recovery page behaves the same was in Chrome incognito as it did previously in Firefox, and still no email.

Please understand that it's not that I'm not getting the SMS emails from GV. They come, eventually, to the correct address. They just come hours or days later, totally out of order.

And it's definitely not a problem with my email account itself, because when I examine the Received: headers of the delayed SMS emails, I can see that the delay is at the 1st hop, within google.com, before it even hits the incoming email server. Also, I get dozens of emails every day on this address, and in general the only ones that are delayed are the forwarded SMS messages from Gmail. And, as I wrote at the top, GV   voicemails  come to email within seconds. But SMS/text messages take hours or days to get through to the same address from the same GV account, That's got to mean something.

Hi Jon 9999

No problem, I understand the issue. Gmail delays would have to be reviewed by the Gmail team, but if you reply with these things, I can ask someone on the GV team to review your account.
  1. Post from the same Google account that is/was used for Google Voice, so Google Voice engineering can find it. Post all the following information from that account.
  2. Give Google Voice staff explicit permission to review your account.
  3. Post the last four digits of your GV phone number with the problem.
  4. Confirm this is a Gmail account that you are getting delayed forwarded messages to.
  5. Please perform several tests, and provide the most recent examples of failures with
    • The date and time (including time-zone) sent and received
    • The last 4 digits of associated phone numbers (not your GV number)
Thanks.

The account recovery emails finally arrived, several hours after I requested them using the link. They arrived late, just like the SMS messages arrive late. Looking at the headers, it appears the delay was at the first hop, between 2002:a67:d00e:: and mail-vk1-f201.google.com . Does that provide a hint at all?

Meantime, I'll collect the information you've requested.
