Have tried everything is can, and have even chatted with support on my Pixel. Have tried making GV default in phone settings but not able. Have tried to link my mobile number in GV but I get an error stating "Can't use this number to verify your account." My calls currently ring first through the default phone app, then through GV if I don't answer the phone app, this causing twice as many rings prior to someone being able to leave a voicemail. Any way to have all calls ring directly through to GV as to avoid ringing both apps prior to being able to leave voicemail?

Hi Daniel Fenderson, welcome to the Google Voice community forum!

Are people calling you using your mobile number, or are they calling your Google Voice number directly?

Hi Daniel, thanks for posting back.

You are using Google Voice backwards of the way it is meant to be used.  Google Voice is designed to be your primary phone number, that can ring multiple devices when it's dialed.  That way if you ever change your device's phone number, or move to another area with a different landline area code, your Google Voice number can remain the same, and still ring through to whatever PSTN phones, or VoIP devices you have connected to your Google Voice account.

That is why you are seeing the double-ringing effect.  You can port your mobile number to Google Voice, and then link it to whatever new phone number you get from your cell phone carrier.

For information on porting your number, read Option 1 in the New Porting and Transfer help page:

Hope this helps explain things for you.

To add to Zanzibar's response,

There is no way to use the GV app as main dialer on Android.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems you're only using your carrier number for people to call you, but want to use Google Voice as voicemail only? And you're forwarding your carrier calls to GV because of it?

If so (if nobody calls you to the GV number directly), then a workaround would be to set Do Not Disturb on on the GV app (not on the phone). That way after your main Phone app stops ringing and forwards to GV, it will just go directly to voicemail.
