Cannot get Google Voice number added to account 3 Recommended Answers 60 Replies 88 Upvotes

I got a Google Voice number to use with a client's AdWords campaign landing page. When doing the setup, I choose the Google Voice number and go through the verification process (via phone as it is forwarding to a land line). Once I am done, the number forwarding is there in settings but the Google Voice number I just selected is not. All I see is "Choose a Google Voice Number" and a button to CHOOSE.

I have done this several times with the same results. I have even seen the number I just selected and verified as an available number when I try again! Also, I have tested the number I selected and it doesn't work. When I call the number it doesn't forward and there are no notifications on the Google voice page alerting me of the calls.

Please note that I am not using this account for setting up the number. I am using a different account--the same Google account I am using for the Adwords campaign.

What am I doing wrong?

Hello Baxter Martin, I understand you're having difficulty verifying a phone to use Google Voice.
You will need to use a different phone to verify the account.  You can then remove that phone as a forwarding phone, and re-add your phone as a forwarding number.  A phone number can only be used once to verify/reclaim a Google Voice phone numberThis includes if the phone number was used by someone who owned the number before you.  This is an anti-fraud and abuse measure.
You might need to use a friend or family member's phone to verify, just let them know that if you do, they will not be able to sign up using that phone number for verification.  However, they will be able to link their number once they find another number to use for verification.  If they don't plan on using Google Voice, this shouldn't present any type of problem.

Hello Zanzibar,

I am NOT having trouble verifying a phone number. The verification process works ok. The trouble I am having is with the Google Voice number itself.

As I mentioned above, I choose the Google Voice number, have it successfully verified, and then the number disappears from the account! After the verification is complete, the Google Voice number is GONE. NOTHING. NO LONGER IN THE ACCOUNT.

The reasons that Google accounts are not eligible to be assigned a Google Voice inbound telephone number include (but may not be limited to):
  1. The submitted number is from a telephone carrier that is ineligible to be used to claim a Google Voice number.  Submit a number from a different carrier.
  2. The submitted number has been previously used by either you, or the previous user of that number, to request a Google Voice number.  Submit a different number.
  3. The submitted number is outside the 48 contiguous US states.  Submit a number from within the 48 contiguous US states.
  4. You have tried to submit forwarding numbers too many times in a short period of time.  Wait at least 24 hours before trying again.
  5. Your Google account has been flagged for some violation of Google's Terms of Service or its Acceptable Use Policy.  You are ineligible to get a Google Voice number.
These limitations are in place to protect the service from abuse.  As such, to limit information which could be used to reverse-engineer the protections, Google will not provide any more-specific details on individual cases where a number request has been denied.

None of those reasons apply to me. This is the first time I am trying to secure a Google Voice number:

1. I am not submitting a number. I am selecting a number from the available numbers that Google presents on the CHOOSE screen.
2. I am not submitting a number. N/A
3. I am not submitting a number. N/A
4. I have waited over 24 hour hours several times.
5. How do I find out if the account has been flagged? The account seems ok. The account has a AdWords campaign that is currently active and there are not issues.
