Call someone

You can make domestic and international calls from your Google Voice number.

Important: Emergency calling is available only for Voice for G Suite accounts managed by your work or school.

To view information for an account managed by your work or school, sign in to your G Suite account.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Voice app Google Voice.
  2. At the bottom, tap Calls Call.
  3. If the person is in your recent calls list, next to their name, tap Call Call.
    1. Or, choose one of these methods:
      • In the search bar at the top, enter the person's name or phone number. Select them from the list of contacts that appears.
      • Tap Dial Dial and enter the number.

        For international calls, enter the country code before the number (for example, +55 for Brazil).

    2. Tap Call Call.

Note: To make calls from Google Voice using your mobile carrier, you need to turn on caller ID for your phone. If you turn off caller ID, you can't make Google Voice calls using your mobile carrier.
You see a different number when calling

When you call someone, you might see a U.S. number that isn’t your Google Voice number or the other person's number. Numbers like these are used to send all Voice calls. The person you're calling will still see your Voice number.

Know how much a call costs

  • Almost all Google Voice calls to the U.S. and Canada are free when you're calling from the U.S.
  • Calls to a few places in the U.S. and Canada cost 1 cent per minute (USD), or the listed rate for your local currency 
  • Calls to places outside the U.S. are at listed rates

Domestic and international calls use minutes from your mobile phone plan, and you might be charged long-distance rates. If you have a U.S. number and try to make a call when you're in another country/region, you'll be charged international rates.

Check your balance
  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Voice app Google Voice.
  2. At the top left, tap Menu Menu.
  3. Next to Credit, you see your current balance.

Note: Credit can't be added in the Voice app, but you can add credit at

  1. In your iPhone's web browser, like Chrome or Safari, go to Google Voice.
  2. At the top right, tap Settings Settings.
  3. Scroll down to Payments.
  4. Next to Current balance, tap Add credit.
  5. Select an amount to add, then tap Add credit.
  6. Select your payment method, then tap Buy.
    You get an email to confirm your purchase.
  7. (Optional) Next to Auto-recharge, select what to do when your balance falls below $2.00:
    • $10, $25, $50—Automatically add this amount of credit. After you select your payment method, tap Save.
    • Notify me via email—Get an email reminder when your balance is low.
    • Off—Don't automatically add more credit to your account.

If you're not sure how much credit to buy, you can find the calling rate for a number. Next to Calling rates, tap Look up Look up and enter the country/region you want to call. Rates vary by country/region and are counted per minute.

Confirm your paid call is using Google Voice

If your call isn't free, you get a message from Google Voice. The message will say how much the call costs or that the call is being routed through Voice.

If you don't get a message, your call isn't using Voice. Your carrier can charge you.

Check that a recent app update didn't change your call settings or another app isn't conflicting with Google Voice.
