To hear incoming calls and communicate effectively, set up your audio, microphone, and notification settings for Google Voice.
Set up your call settings
- On your computer, open Google Voice.
- At the top right, click Settings
.
- On the left side panel, click Calls.
- Under “Calls”, set up your preferred call settings.
Tip: If an issue is detected, at the top right of the Voice page, a “Check your settings” notification shows. To configure your settings:
- Click Go
.
- In the “Troubleshooting & Help” pop-up window, next to “Microphone”, click Configure.
- If you previously denied permission, a warning icon displays instead of “Configure”.
- In the window that appears, select an access option:
- Allow while visiting the site
- Allow this time
- Never allow
- Optional: Set up additional incoming call settings:
- Enable notifications: In the “Troubleshooting & Help” pop-up window, next to “Notification”, click Allow.
- Receive calls on the web: In the “Troubleshooting & Help” pop-up window, next to “Receive calls on the web”, click Turn on
- Do Not Disturb: If it’s on, to ensure calls ring on your computer, in the “Troubleshooting & Help” pop-up window, next to “Do not disturb is on”, click Turn off.
If you use Google Chrome:
- In browser settings, allow microphone access so others can hear you. Learn how to use your camera and microphone in Chrome.
- To hear call ringtones in your browser, change your default sound permissions.
- To get notifications about your messages, missed calls, or voicemail, fix issues with notifications.
- To keep your tab open for getting calls, turn off Chrome Memory Saver and keep specific sites active.
If you use another browser:
- In your browser settings, set permissions for the microphone, alerts, and sound or media autoplay to “Allow” for voice.google.com.
- To prevent call interruptions, add voice.google.com to the exception list in your browser memory saver or sleeping tab settings.
Test speaker & audio output
To set settings for Web notifications:
- At the top right, click Audio settings
.
- Test call ring tones and speakers:
- If you hear the test sound, click Yes.
- If you don’t hear the test sound, click No.
Tip: If you don’t hear the audio, check your browser site permissions to make sure sound and autoplay are allowed. Learn about autoplay policy in Chrome.
Test notifications
- On your computer, open Google Voice.
- At the top right, click Settings
.
- Under “Web notifications”, click Turn on.
- In the pop-up window, click Allow.
- To test if notifications work, click Test.
