Manage contacts using groups and Google+ Circles

Use groups to manage contacts

You can assign your contacts to the Friends, Family, or Coworkers group, or create your own contact group name. For each group, you can set which phones will ring and assign a specific voicemail greeting. For example, you can adjust your settings so that when your contacts in your Coworkers group call, Google Voice rings your office phone only, and those contacts hear the voicemail greeting you created for them.

Google Voice also comes with two default groups-- one for all of your contacts and the other for anonymous callers or people not saved as contacts. You can control settings for these groups the same way you control settings for the custom groups you create. For example, you can send all calls from anonymous numbers to voicemail.

There are two ways to adjust your phone settings for your groups:

  • Click the gear icon at the top of the page so that you can access your Settings, and select the Groups & Circles tab. To set what phones should ring for each contact group, click the Edit button under the group name and choose which phone(s) you want to ring when someone in the group calls your Google number. Click Save when you're finished.
  • Click Contacts on the left side of the page, and select the group you want to customize on the left side. Click the Edit Google Voice Settings which will bring you to the Groups tab. Click Edit button under the group name and choose which phone(s) you want to ring when someone in the group calls your Google number. Then, click Save.

Use Google+ Circles to manage contacts

You can also manage your callers by using Google+ Circles in Google Voice. You can customize call settings for people in each of your Google+ Circles the same way you customize using Groups in Google Voice.

If you have a person in more than one Group or Google+ Circle and these groups and/or circles have different calling settings (ex. you have one caller in a group that goes straight to voicemail, and this same caller is also in a Google+ Circle that you have set to ring your cell phone), Google Voice won't know which setting to apply. You'll need to edit the custom settings for this individual caller by going to Settings, Groups, Manage Groups, and then clicking the individual caller and clicking Edit.
