Update to Vault privileges

Your company can allow specific users in your domain to manage matters, place holds, create retention policies, or perform any other functions in Vault. Instead of granting full Vault management privileges to those users, your company can limit what they can do or view in Vault by granting them a subset of privileges.

On October 6, 2013, we consolidated Vault privileges to make them easier to manage. The table below maps the consolidation. For descriptions of the current privileges and instructions on how to grant them to users, see Understand and grant Vault privileges.

These original privileges allowed users to... ...and are now mapped to these privileges

Manage Matters

  • Create matters and share those matters with other users.
  • Close, open, and modify matters to which they have access.

Administrate Matters

  • Delete and restore matters to which have access. This privilege included the Manage Matters privilege.

Manage Matters

The current Manage Matters privilege combines the original Manage Matters and Administrate Matters privileges.

Access All Matters

  • View all matters in a domain.

View All Matters

The current View All Matters privilege is the same as the original Access All Matters privilege.

Create Holds

  • Create holds in matters to which they have access.

Remove Holds

  • Remove holds in matters to which they have access. This privilege included the Create Holds privilege.

Manage Holds

The current Manage Holds privilege combines the original Create Holds and Remove Holds privileges.

Access Held Data

  • Perform searches, counts, and exports of data on hold. To perform these tasks, users also had to have the Count, Search, and Manage Export privileges.

    Note: This privilege is not the same as the Held Data search functionality in the Vault interface.

Access All Data

  • Perform searches, counts, and exports of all data in the domain or of data on hold. To perform these tasks, users also had to have the Count, Search, and Manage Exports privileges. This privilege automatically included the Access Held Data privilege.

Count

  • Count the number of messages in the domain that match search queries in matters to which they have access. To view matching items in the query, users also had to have the Search privilege.

Search

  • Search for and see results related to that search in matters to which they have access. To view the content of messages or documents, users also had to have the View Documents privilege. This privilege automatically included the Count privilege.

View Documents

  • View the content of messages or documents related to searches in matters to which they have access. This privilege automatically included the Search and Count privileges.

Manage Saved Queries

  • Create, delete, and rename saved search queries in matters to which they have access.

Manage Searches

The current Manage Searches privilege combines the original Access All Data, Count, Search, View Documents, and Manage Saved Queries privileges.

Note: The Access Held Data privilege has been removed.

Manage Exports

  • Create and delete exports in matters to which they have access.

Download Exports

  • Download exports from matters to which they have access.

Manage Exports

The current Manage Exports privilege combines the original Manage Exports and Download Exports privileges.

View Retention Policies

  • View all retention policies in the domain.

View Retention Policies

The current View Retention Policies privilege is the same as the original View Retention Policies privilege.

Manage Retention Policies

  • Create, view, update, and delete retention rules for the domain.

Manage Retention Policies

The current Manage Retention Policies privilege is the same as the original Manage Retention Policies privilege.

Audit Matters

  • View audit logs for matters to which they have access.
  • View hold reports for matters to which they have access.

Audit System

  • View the audit logs for all user activity and view hold reports for the entire domain. This privilege automatically included the Audit Matters privilege.

Manage Audits

The current Manage Audits privilege combines the original Audit Matters and Audit System privileges.
