Search results
When you search for Chat messages, Vault returns the messages that match your search criteria as well as some of the messages that came before and after the matched messages in the same conversation. The preceding and following messages provide the conversational context.
To provide context for matching messages in DMs, group chats, and spaces with in-line threading, Vault includes messages sent up to 12 hours before and 12 hours after the matched message from the same conversation. If the matched message is an in-line reply, Vault calculates the time window based on the top-level message that the matched message was in reply to. All top-level messages within the time window are included for context, plus all in-line replies to those top-level messages. For example:
- Message A is sent; Message B is sent 10 hours later; Message B2 is sent two days after Message B, as an in-line reply to Message B; Message C is sent 10 hours after Message B2. If your Vault search matches only on Message B2, Vault will include Messages A, B, and B2, but not C.
The time window is calculated as 12 hours before and 12 hours after Message B. Message A is included because it is within that time window (10 hours). Message B is included because it is within that time window (0 hours). Message B2 is included because its top-level message, Message B, was included. Message C is not within the time window (two days 10 hours after Message B) and is therefore not included.
For long conversations, only the first 1500 messages (up to 900 MB, starting from 12 hours before each matched message) are available in preview. However, an export of the search results includes all messages that match your query or are provided for context, including messages not in preview.
Exports
When you export Chat messages, Vault exports the messages that match your search criteria as well as the context as defined above.
Vault exports a Chat conversation as a single document unless there is a 24-hour break between top-level messages. If a conversation has a 24-hour break, Vault creates a new document containing all top-level messages (and all of their in-line replies) until the next 24-hour break. For example:
- Message A is sent, then Message B is sent 10 hours later, and Message C is sent 20 hours after Message B. All three messages match your search.
Vault exports the entire conversation as a single document spanning from 12 hours before Message A to 12 hours after Message C. Even though Message A and Message C were sent more than 24 hours apart, there was no gap of 24 hours between messages.
- Message A is sent, then Message B is sent 10 hours later, and Message C is sent 30 hours after Message B. All three messages match your search.
Since there was a 24 hour gap between Message B and Message C, Vault exports two documents: (1) a document reflecting 12 hours before Message A through 12 hours after Message B; and (2) a document reflecting 12 hours before and after Message C.
