Installing Urchin 4 startup scripts on Mac OS X

Overview

This article explains how to setup Urchin 4 startup scripts on a Mac OS X Server or Workstation. The following instructions assume that the user has administrative access to the machine and has a basic knowledge of editing files via the terminal application. Executable commands are shown in () for some items.

  1. Download the Mac OS X startup scripts archive to your Desktop using a web browser
  2. Open the Terminal application located in :Applications:Utilities
  3. Uncompress the archive with gunzip (gunzip ~/Desktop/MacOSXStartupItemsUrchin40.tar.gz)
  4. Change into the /Library directory (cd /Library)
  5. Untar the MacOSXStartupItemsUrchin40.tar file (sudo tar xf ~/Desktop/MacOSXStartupItemsUrchin40.tar
  6. If you installed Urchin 4 into a directory other than /usr/local/urchin4, edit the /Library/StartupItems/Urchin4/Urchin4 file and change the line that says "cd /usr/local/urchin4/bin/" to reflect the appropriate path change. For instance, if Urchin 4 was installed in /Applications/urchin4, the line would need to be changed to "cd /Applications/urchin4/bin".
  7. Edit the /etc/hostconfig and add the following line:
    URCHIN4=-YES-
  8. Restart the machine and verify that the Urchin services started properly by accessing them through your web browser.
