Urchin WebAnalytics Software is discontinued and is no longer supported. All Urchin documentation applies only to the Urchin product as it was at the time of discontinuation, and does not apply to any Google Analytics products or services.

How can I increase the Urchin database size limit beyond 40,000 records?

Every record in the Urchin report resides in a fixed-size database. The files that comprise the database are rotated monthly. So, there is a limit to how many unique records can be listed in the database for every month. The limit for the database records can be increased to a maximum level of 500,000. By default that limit is set to 10,000 records. That means that Urchin will record a total of 10,000 unique record items every month for every profile.

This value can be increased to 40,000 through the Urchin Adminstration console. Increasing that value above 40,000 must be done directly from the command line as follows:

  • Use a command shell to connect to the Urchin server.
  • Stop the Urchin services: cd /path/to/urchin/bin urchinctl -stop
  • Export the Urchin configuration into a text file: uconf-export -f config.txt
  • Open the resulting "config.txt" file from the ~/urchin/util directory with a text editor.
  • Add the following line to the "Process Settings" Container: cs_limitdbtable=XXXX (where XXXX is any value up to 500,000)
  • Save your changes to the file and import the file to affect the changes: uconf-import -o -f config.txt

Note:Increasing the database limit will impact your server in two ways:

  • The Urchin database will use more disk space
  • Urchin will use more memory and/or take longer to process logs
