Refine Trends results by category

If you're using Trends to search for a word that has multiple meanings, you can filter your results to a certain category to get data for the right version of the word. For example, if you search for jaguar, you can add a category to indicate if you mean the animal or the car manufacturer.

Add a category

  1. Open Google Trends.
  2. Search for a term like jaguar.
  3. Under the search box, click All categories > choose a category.

The results show the number of searches for that term in a similar context.

Compare search term to category

To see the popularity of your term over time compared to any other term in that category:

  1. Open Google Trends.
  2. Search for a term like java.
  3. Click All categories > choose a category.
  4. Above the graph, check the box next to Compare to category.

Category classifications are an approximation and are less accurate in languages with fewer examples.
