Shopping Competitiveness

Track your ranking and understand your participation and click performance on Google Flights shopping pages.

Overview

The Google Flights Shopping Competitiveness dashboard provides air carrier partners with detailed insights into how your flights are performing on Google Flights shopping pages. This dashboard allows you to understand your ranking, participation and click performance by route, empowering you to make data-driven decisions to optimize your presence.

Note: This dashboard filters out routes where you did not have at least 50 impressions in the selected time frame.

Ranking

We track your rank on the GF shopping pages, by taking the highest position where you appear on the page as an operating carrier, with the top position being 1.

When we show a “Top departing flights” box with, for example, 5 flights, those are the top 5. The rank for the first position in the “Other departing flights” is 6.

Average Rank

The average position on the page, when you appeared.

Avg. Rank in Top Flights

The average position on the page, when you appeared in the “Top” section.

Top Flights When Present

How often you showed on the “Top” section, given that you were present on the page. Appearing below the fold only counts as being present if the user clicks on “View more flights”.

First Position

How often you were the absolute first position on the page.

Top 3 Positions

How often you were in one of the first 3 positions on the page. This should always be higher than the “First Position” metric.

Top 5 Positions

How often you were in one of the first 5 positions on the page. This should always be higher than the “Top 3 Positions” metric.

Top 10 Positions

How often you were in one of the first 10 positions on the page. This should always be higher than the “Top 5 Positions” metric.

Outside Top 10 Positions

How often you were below the first 10 positions on the page (but appeared). This should sum with “Top 10 Positions” to 100%.

Route Rank

Used to order the table. Represents the popularity of the route based on the number of your impressions.

Participation

Participation

How often you appeared in Google Flights shopping pages. We do not adjust for filters that users might use. In particular, traffic coming from Google Search often renders a shopping page with a specific airline selected as a filter, which may detract from your reported participation.

Route Rank

Used to order the table. Represents the popularity of the route based on the number of queries (pages viewed) for the market.

Outbound Selections

This section focuses on the outbound selection page. A selection is a user click on an outbound flight.

Pct of All Outbound Selections

Of all clicks on this shopping page in the selected period, how many went to you regardless of your presence on the page.

Pct of All Outbound Selections Given Presence

Of all clicks on this shopping page in the selected period, how many went to you given that you appeared. This should be strictly equal or higher than “Pct of All Outbound Selections”.

Pct of All Outbound Selections Given Presence In Top Flights

Of all clicks on this shopping page in the selected period, how many went to you given that you appeared in the “Top departing flights” section. This is often higher than the “Pct of All Outbound Selections Given Presence” metric, given the user preference for the more visible choices.

Route Rank

Used to order the table. Represents the popularity of the route based on the number of outbound selections (clicks).

Dimensions

Metrics are often shown by, and can be filtered by (using the filter bar on top) the following dimensions:

Date

A date interval can be set on the top right, affecting the whole dashboard. This is the user search date. Note that there is usually a 3 day lag between the current date and the last date available in your data.

Origin

The airport combination for the origin of the query. Note that users can search multiple cities at once, which can create many different combinations of airports.

Destination

The airport combination for the destination of the query. Note that users can search multiple cities at once, which can create many different combinations of airports.

Origin City

The city (or cities) for the origin of the query.

Destination City

The city (or cities) for the destination of the query.

Origin Country

The country (or countries) for the origin of the query.

Destination Country

The country (or countries) for the destination of the query.

Origin Continent

The continent (or continents) for the origin of the query.

Destination Continent

The continent (or continents) for the origin of the query.

Is Domestic

Whether the origin country and destination country are the same. In the edge case where there are multiple countries for origin or destination, we consider the search domestic if at least one country is the same between them.
