Does google translate work with tv or radio?

I tried to use google translate on my Android phone to translate Japanese tv shows, but the app acts like it doesn't hear anything from the tv. Then I tried to translate normal English broadcasts to other languages, same story. The microphone button flashes red, showing that the app is listening, but no text was intercepted in the app.

Is this just by design of the app that voices from speakers do not get translated? I'm really curious about it.

Hi, Tim. Welcome to Google Translate Forum.

Maybe Google Translate can't hear well when the voice input comes from a device. But if you yourself try any speaking sentence, you'll see it'll get translated.

Regards,
Yan

But why can't google translate hear from the tv or radio though? It sounds just like normal voice. Maybe it can tell that the voice is from a speaker so by design, it stops translating? I know that It has no problem hearing real human voices.

Hi,

Maybe it just can't listen to electronic voices or sounds (they are not just like human sounds)
