Find & manage Translate history

You can save your Google Translate history to find the meanings of words or phrases you translate. Your saved translations sync across your devices.

The Translate app syncs your history from your device to the cloud. When you’re signed in, your translations automatically save to the cloud. You can manage your saved history in My Activity.

Important: If you don’t want to use cloud history in the app, you must sign out of your account. After you sign out, you can only view on-device history.

Find & control your translation history across web & app

  1. Open the Translate app and sign in to your account.
  2. If there’s history stored on your device, you’ll get a notification.
  3. Before you’re asked to upload your history to sync with your account in the cloud or delete it from your device, you can tap View all.

View your history

Important: If you’re not signed in to your account, you can only get your on-device translation history. 

After you open the Translate app Translate app, to find your history on the home menu, at the bottom, click the Star Remove from phrasebook. To view all your activity in My Activity, from the home menu, at the bottom right, tap Settings . Then, select Manage activity.

Sync your history to the cloud

Important:

  • To use synced history, you must be signed in and have Web & App Activity turned on.
  • If Web & App Activity is off, you can view and delete your history but you can’t create new entries.
  • Cloud history entries do not automatically show up. Newly synced entries may take a few hours to show up.
  1. Open the Translate app Translate app.
  2. To sync to the cloud, open History.
  3. In the menu, tap Refresh .
    • History automatically syncs when you open the app and periodically every few hours.

If cloud sync doesn't work:

  • Make sure your device is online.
  • Make sure you're not in airplane mode.

Manage your activity

To find saved content and specific words or phrases in your translated text history, you can search your My Activity. To do this from the home menu, at the bottom right, tap Settings . Then, select Manage activity.

Access your full history

In the Translate app, you can find your full history and do customized searches.

  1. Open the Translate app Translate app.
  2. In the bottom right, tap Settings .
  3. At the bottom, tap Manage activity.
  4. At the top, to browse your history, use the search bar.

Turn on Web & App Activity

To save your data in the Translate app, you must turn on Web & App Activity.

  1. Open the Translate app Translate app.
  2. At the bottom, tap Settings .
  3. Tap Manage history.
  4. Under “Controls,” turn on Web & App Activity.

If you have Web & App Activity turned off, you can find and delete your history but you can’t create new entries. At the top of the history list, there’s a card that opens My Activity.

Delete history

Important: If you’re signed in, it can take a couple hours for your cleared history to be reflected in the app. If you’re signed out, there’s no delay when you clear your history. Only signed-out users can delete all history from the app.

  1. Open the Translate app Translate app.
  2. In the bottom right, tap Settings .
  3. Tap Manage history and then Delete and then Delete today, Delete custom range, Delete all time, or Auto-delete.

Delete all history

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Translate app Translate app.
  2. At the bottom right, tap Settings .
  3. Tap Manage history and then Delete and then Delete all time.

Delete single past translations

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Translate app Translate app.
  2. At the bottom of the screen, find the word or phrase.
  3. Swipe it left.
