- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Translate app

- At the bottom, select the languages for your conversation.
- At the bottom, tap Live translate
.
- The microphone automatically detects when one language stops and the other language starts.
- To hear a translation, tap any part of the text.
- To pause or resume translation, tap Speak
.
- To exit translation, at the top, tap Back
.
Face to face mode
In the face to face mode, each speaker can view the transcription and translation of each of their own languages on each half of the screen.
- To view translations in the face to face mode, tap Face to face
.
- To pause or resume translation, tap Speak
.
- To exit face to face mode, tap Close
.
Auto playback
When Auto playback is turned on, the app automatically reads translations when a speaker pauses.
- To turn "Auto playback" on or off, tap Auto playback

Tip: To adjust text size, tap Settings . Then, use the slider.
Use Live translate with headphones
Important:
- Only Android users in the US, IN, and MX can access Live translate with headphones.

- To use Live translate with headphones, connect any brand of headphones to your Android mobile device.
- Make sure that your device is on the latest app version.
To listen to audio in a language you don't understand, connect your headphones to your mobile device and listen to real-time translations in a language you do understand.
- On your Android phone or tablet, connect your headphones.
- Open the Translate app.
- At the bottom, tap Live translate.
- Under “Their language,” select a language you understand.
- If you're unsure of the language, select Auto Detect.
- Under “Your language,” select your preferred language or the language you want to hear on your headphones.
- To translate, tap Start.
- At the bottom left, tap the dropdown menu.
- Select a mode to let you listen, have a conversation, or just read a transcript:
- Listening mode: Translate continuously listens and translates to your desired language to your headphones.
- Conversation mode: Translate listens for multiple languages. It alternates translations between the 2 languages.
- Silent mode: You can find the translations on the screen but there’s no audio output.
