Translate by speech

If your device has a microphone, you can translate spoken words and phrases. In some languages, you can hear the translation spoken aloud.

Important: If you use an audible screen reader, we recommend you use headphones, as the screen reader voice may interfere with the transcribed speech.

Translate by speech

  1. Open the Translate app Translate app.
  2. At the top, select the languages to translate between.
  3. Tap Speak Speak
    • If this button is grayed out, the spoken language can't be translated.
  4. After it says "Speak now," say what you want to translate.

Change your speech settings

Block offensive words

  1. Open the Translate app Translate app.
  2. At the bottom right, tap Settings  and then Speech input
  3. Turn on Block offensive words.

Change region/dialect

  1. Open the Translate app Translate app.
  2. At the bottom right, tap Settings  and then Speech region.
  3. Tap the language you want to change.
  4. Tap the region associated with the dialect you want.
Tip: Some languages don't have all dialects available.

Change your audio pace

  1. Open the Translate app Translate app.
  2. At the bottom right, tap Settings Settings and then Speed.
  3. Select Normal, Slow, or Slower.
