Translate by speech

You can translate spoken words and phrases if your device has a microphone. In some languages, you'll hear the translation spoken aloud.

This feature is currently only available on the Chrome operating system.

Translate by speech

  1. Open the Translate app Translate app.
  2. At the top of the screen, tap the language buttons to select the languages to translate between.
  3. Tap Speak Speak. If this button is grayed out, the spoken language can't yet be translated.
  4. When told to "Speak now," say what you want to translate.

Change your speech settings

  1. Open the Translate app Translate app.
  2. Tap Settings Settings and then Speech input.
  3. Pick a setting. For example:
    • To automatically speak translated text, turn on Speak output.
    • To translate offensive words, turn off Block offensive words.
    • To choose from available dialects, tap Region. Then tap the language, and then the dialect.
      Note: Not all languages have dialect support.

Block offensive words

  1. Open the Translate app Translate app.
  2. At the bottom right, tap Settings and then Speech input
  3. Turn on Block offensive words.

Change region/dialect

  1. Open the Translate app Translate app.
  2. At the bottom right, tap Settings and then Speech region.
  3. Tap the language you want to change the dialect/region.
    Note: Some languages don't have all dialects available.
  4. Tap the region connected with the dialect you want.
