Get personalized conversation practice in the Translate app

With the new AI-powered language learning experience in the Translate app, you can:

• Customize scenarios to practice specifically around your language learning goals, whether that's traveling, school, work, or connecting with friends and family.
• Practice real-life conversations for everyday social interactions.
• Engage in listening and speaking activities tailored to your proficiency level with the help of AI.

Availability

Important:

• To get started, download the latest version of the Google Translate app for Android or Google Translate app for iOS.
• This limited beta experience is currently available for:
  • English speakers learning Spanish and French.
  • Spanish, French, and Portuguese speakers learning English.

Practice languages with the help of AI

Important: Generative AI is experimental and can be inaccurate.

1. On your phone, open the Translate app .
2. Tap Practice at the bottom of your screen.
3. Tap Get started.
4. Select the language you want your device to display in for instructions and explanations.
5. Select the language you want to practice, then tap Next.
6. Select your proficiency level for the language you want to practice.
   • Select Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced.
   • Tap Next.
7. You can describe what’s motivating you to learn the language in your own words or select from the list.
8. Tap Start practicing.
9. Select from recommended scenarios personalized around your goals and level of proficiency.
   • You can also create your own scenario or explore More scenarios .
10. For each scenario, you can select a listening or speaking activity:
    • Listening: Tap to listen to a short audio clip in the language you’re practicing, then select the words that come up in the story.
    • Speaking: Tap to practice a conversation with AI to complete your given tasks.

Tips:

• Tap to keep track of your daily progress.
• There are several rounds to each activity. You will earn a daily activities star at the end of each completed activity.
• For Listening activities, you can select Make it harder or Make it easier to adjust the difficulty level at the end of each round. If you skip this step, the level of difficulty will stay the same for the next round.

Manage your practice settings

To update language proficiency:

1. At the top right corner of the screen, tap .
2. On the Settings screen, in the Languages section, tap Proficiency.
3. Select your new level of proficiency.

To delete practice history:

1. At the top right corner of the screen, tap .
2. On the Settings screen, tap Delete practice history.
3. In the confirmation dialog, confirm by tapping Delete.

Send feedback

You can find the option to give feedback at the bottom of the screen:

1. Select Thumbs up or Thumbs down at the end of each activity.
2. Select Share more feedback to give additional feedback.
   • You can add more details in the text field or add a screenshot (recommended).
3. To send your feedback, select Submit.
