Make searching easy in Google Toolbar

To make it easier to search in Google Toolbar, use these features.

Use the search box

You can use the search box in the Toolbar to help you with your search. Toolbar will suggest based on your Google bookmarks, Toolbar search history, spelling corrections, or sponsored links.

Make Toolbar suggest search queries

To turn on search suggestions:

  1. On your Toolbar, click Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Check Suggest searches as you type.
  4. Click Save.

To turn off search suggestions, follow the steps above and uncheck Suggest searches as you type.

Search specific websites

To choose a website to search, click Search and select a search type from the drop-down menu.

Search by website name

You can enter a website's name into Internet Explorer's address bar and Toolbar will open its page. For example, type oxford university and Toolbar will open the University of Oxford homepage.

If Toolbar is unfamiliar with the website, it will display search results instead.

  1. On your Toolbar, click Settings.
  2. Click General.
  3. Check Browse by Name in the address bar .
  4. Click Save.

To turn off browsing by name, follow the steps above and uncheck Browse by name in the address bar .

Note: This feature isn't available in Internet Explorer 8+.

Get instant search suggestions

You can type your search term in the search box and choose from the suggestions that Toolbar Instant will automatically provide. If you continue to type, the suggestions may change.

Note: Instant search is not available in all domains and languages.

  1. On your Toolbar, click Settings .
  2. Select General.
  3. Check "Enable Instant for faster searching and browsing".
  4. Click Save.
  5. Restart your browser.

To turn off Toolbar Instant, follow the steps above and uncheck Enable Instant for faster searching and browsing.

To avoid adult websites, you can turn on SafeSearch at the "strict filtering" level.

If you turned off Google Instant Toolbar before, you may not see results appear as you type. Learn more about why you might not see instant results.

Find your search query easily

When you click a search result, a box at the bottom-right corner of the page may appear with text that matches your search query. This feature, called Quick Scroll, helps you search more quickly.

Click the text and it’ll take you to that specific part of the page.  

Turn Quick Scroll on or off

Quick Scroll only appears when it’s likely to be useful. You can turn the feature on or off.

  1. On your Toolbar, click Settings .
  2. On the Tools tab, check Quick Scroll.
  3. Click Save.
To turn off, follow the steps above and uncheck ‘Quick Scroll.' 

Highlight and find words on webpages

  1. On your Toolbar, click Settings .
  2. On the left, click Tools.
  3. Check Highlight .
  4. Click Save.

To turn off, uncheck Highlight .

Find specific words by highlighting
  1. Go to a webpage.
  2. On the Toolbar search box, type a word or phrase.
  3. On the Toolbar, click Highlight .

If you don’t see the button, click More > Highlight.

Your word or phrase will be highlighted wherever it appears on the page.
Find individual words in your search

If you type a phrase in the Toolbar search box, you can search a webpage for individual words in the phrase:

  1. On Toolbar, look for buttons labeled with each word next to Search 
  2. To see where the word first appears on the page, click the word.
  3. Repeat to find other words on the page.
