Set up Google tag gateway for advertisers in Amazon CloudFront with Tag Assistant

You can configure Google tag gateway for advertisers by using Amazon CloudFront as a content delivery network (CDN). This setup is facilitated by a guided workflow in Tag Assistant, which helps you navigate the external Amazon Web Services (AWS) console to perform the necessary configurations.

What is Google tag gateway for advertisers?

Google tag gateway for advertisers allows you to deploy a Google tag using your own domain, enhancing data privacy and improving signal measurement recovery. Unlike standard setups where tags are requested from a Google domain, Google tag gateway for advertisers loads the tag from your domain and sends measurement events to your domain, where they are forwarded to Google.

Before you begin

• You have the Google tag (for example, G-123, AW-456) running on your website.
• You have an existing Amazon CloudFront distribution associated with the website URL you intend to scan.
• You have access to your AWS account to set up Google tag gateway for advertisers.
• Enabling this feature affects Google tag firing behaviour. If your current tag behaviour is impacted by user consent actions, adopt consent mode and review your consent settings to ensure that your preferences are respected. Learn more about consent mode.

Set up Google tag gateway for advertisers

Step 1 of 4: Open the Google tag settings

Google Ads instructions

1. In your Google Ads account, click the tools icon.
2. Click Data manager.
3. Under “Google tag”, click Manage and then go to “Admin”.

Google Analytics instructions

1. In your Google Analytics account, go to the “Admin” screen.
2. In Data streams, click a stream to see details.
3. Click Configure tag settings, and then go to “Admin”.

Campaign Manager 360 instructions

1. Open your Campaign Manager 360 advertiser.
2. In the left menu, select Data manager under “Floodlight”.
3. On the “Data manager” page, select Manage under the “Google tag” section.
4. In the “Google tag” settings panel, go to Admin.

Google Tag Manager instructions

1. In your Google Tag Manager account, click the Google tags tab to see Google tags that you've previously set up.
2. Click the tag name to edit the Google tag settings.

Step 2 of 4: Configure your Google tag settings

1. In Admin, click Google tag gateway.
2. Enter your website URL and click scan.
   • You may need to click Add CDN if you’ve already configured Google Tag Gateway for another URL.
3. Once Amazon CloudFront is detected, click Set up with Tag Assistant.
4. If the Tag Assistant chrome extension is not installed, you’ll be prompted to install it from the Chrome Web Store.

Step 3 of 4: Configure Google Tag Gateway on Amazon CloudFront

1. Tag Assistant will open in the side-panel. Click Do it for me to begin the guided setup.
2. Sign in to the AWS console when redirected.
3. Tag Assistant will automatically filter your Cloudfront Distributions. Click the filtered distribution that contains your website URL.
4. Click Start for me to allow Tag Assistant to create a new origin.
5. Review the pre-filled origin settings, and click Create Origin.
6. Click Start for me to allow Tag Assistant to create a new redirect behavior.
7. Review the pre-filled behavior settings and path pattern (measurement path), and click Create Behavior.
8. Wait for the Tag Assistant health check to verify the configuration.
9. Once complete, copy the provided replacement tag script and place it on each page of your website.

Step 4 of 4: Test the measurement setup

1. After replacing the tag, click Go to Tag Assistant.
2. Navigate through your website to trigger events.
3. In the Summary > Output > Hits Sent tab, verify that hits are being routed to your measurement path (such as, /metrics).
