Starting November 9, 2022, Stadia will attempt to automatically process refunds for all purchases of games, add-on content and subscriptions fees other than Stadia Pro made through the Stadia store. We ask for your patience as we work through each transaction and that you refrain from contacting Customer Support as they will not be able to expedite your refund during this time. Play Stadia on mobile devices

You can link your Stadia Controller wirelessly to a compatible mobile device using Wi-Fi. You can also use a USB cable to connect your Stadia Controller or supported third-party gamepad to your mobile device. Some third-party gamepads also support Bluetooth connectivity.

If you don't connect a controller, you can play directly on your mobile device screen using the touch gamepad, or direct touch for games that support it.

If you're using a USB-C cable adapter to connect a controller to your mobile device, make sure the adapter side of the cable is connected to your mobile device.
Note: If you play Stadia on your iPhone or iPad, wired controllers are not officially supported at this time. However, you can connect a Stadia Controller to your device using the wireless instructions below, or connect a compatible controller with Bluetooth.

Start a game

Before you start playing, link your Stadia Controller wirelessly to your mobile device, or connect it with a USB-C cable.

Wireless connection

  1. On your mobile device, open the Stadia app Stadia icon.
  2. Scroll down to "Your games" and tap the game you want to play.
  3. Make sure "This screen" is selected in the drop-down menu.
  4. Tap Play Stadia Play button. When the game launches, you'll be prompted to link a controller.
  5. On your Stadia Controller, press and hold the Stadia button Stadia button until the controller vibrates twice to re-enter linking mode.
    • The status light on your controller will blink white.
  6. Using the Stadia Controller, input the linking code displayed on your screen.

Note: If you use your mobile data plan to play Stadia on your mobile device, you won't be able to play wirelessly with your Stadia Controller. To play wirelessly, connect your mobile device and Stadia Controller to the same Wi-Fi network.

Wired connection

  1. Connect your Stadia Controller to your Android mobile device with a USB-C cable.
  2. On your Android mobile device, open the Stadia app Stadia icon.
    • Depending on your settings, connecting a gamepad might start the app automatically.
  3. Scroll down to "Your games" and tap the game you want to play.
  4. Make sure "This screen" is selected in the drop-down menu.
  5. Tap Play Stadia Play button.

Note: When you connect your Stadia Controller to your Android mobile device or link to it wirelessly, you should be able to receive and respond to in-game voice chat or party chat when you connect a headset with microphone to your controller. You can also use Bluetooth or a USB cable to connect a headset to your Android mobile device.

Reconnect a controller

If your controller is disconnected while you're playing a game, a linking code will appear on your screen.

  • To link your Stadia Controller wirelessly, make sure it's charged and in linking mode, then enter the linking code that appears on your mobile device's screen.
  • To reconnect a wired controller, connect it to your mobile device with a USB-C cable.
  • To exit the game, tap Exit game.

Note: If you exit your game, you can switch screens without losing your progress.

Use the touch gamepad

You can play Stadia on a compatible mobile device without a controller using the touch gamepad. To try it, launch a game when you don't have a controller connected, then tap Try touch gamepad.

Stadia Controller buttons will appear on your device's touch screen. Just press or tap them to play.

You can tap and drag the L or R circles on the screen to move the left or right analog sticks. You can also:

  • Tap and drag any empty space on the screen to move the right analog stick.
  • Tap and drag L1 or L2 to move the left analog stick (for example, to move your character) while performing another action.
  • Tap and drag R1 or R2 to move the right analog stick (for example, to move the camera) while performing another action.

Note: Some in-game interactions may be more difficult with the touch gamepad, especially for games that require using multiple controls at once. For the best experience, a Stadia Controller or third-party gamepad is recommended.

Direct touch

Direct touch is a feature available on Android and iOS® mobile devices, supported by specific games, that lets you interact directly with a game using your mobile device's touch screen. Unlike the touch gamepad, direct touch won't display Stadia Controller controls (like analog sticks or face buttons). Instead, you control the game by tapping or sliding directly on your touch screen.

To check if a game supports direct touch, check for "Touch" support under the input options on its details page in the Stadia store. You'll have the option to enable direct touch when you launch the game in the Android Stadia app Stadia icon or the web app on an iOS device.

Play Stadia using mobile data

To play Stadia when your mobile device isn't connected to a Wi-Fi network, open the Stadia app Stadia icon and turn on the "Use mobile data" option in your Performance settings. This setting will only take effect on the device you set it on, and you can turn it off at any time. If you experience quality issues with your stream, it's recommended you turn off this option.

Tip: If you're playing on an iOS device and don't have access to a Wi-Fi network, choose Up to 720p (mobile data optimized) to optimize your stream quality. When you reconnect your device to Wi-Fi, remember to change your Performance settings back to Up to 720p or Up to 1080p to resume normal data usage.

To play Stadia on a mobile data network:

  • You must be on an LTE or 5G network.
  • Your mobile device must have a solid, consistent cellular signal.
  • Stay in one place. If you're in a vehicle or moving quickly, your connection may be interrupted.
  • Avoid public areas with lots of mobile device network traffic. Network performance may be degraded in these areas.

Tip: Playing games on Stadia may use a significant amount of data. You are responsible for any access or data fees incurred from your internet provider or mobile carrier. It is strongly recommended that you track your data usage to avoid unexpected data charges.

Open the Stadia menu

While you're playing a game, open the Stadia menu to view details like your friends list and connection status:

  1. On your Stadia Controller, press the Stadia button Stadia button.
  2. Tap the Stadia menu to interact with it.

Exit your current game

To exit a game when playing on a mobile device:

Stadia Controller or supported gamepad

  1. Press and hold the Stadia button Stadia button for two seconds.
    • You can also press the Home button on some third-party controllers.
  2. Tap Exit game.
