Turn off or reset your Stadia Controller

You can turn off your Stadia Controller in different ways, depending on whether it's connected to your device with a USB cable, or linked wirelessly through your Wi-Fi network.

If your controller becomes unresponsive, or you want to set it up on a new Wi-Fi network, you can try resetting it.

Tips for recovering an unresponsive Stadia Controller

If your Stadia Controller becomes unresponsive, try the following steps before you turn it off or reset it:

  1. Using a functional charger and USB-C cable, plug your Stadia Controller into a power source to charge it for 30 minutes.
  2. Hardware reset your Stadia Controller.
  3. While holding down the Y button Y button, press the Stadia button Stadia button until the controller rumbles and the status light turns on.
  4. Set up your controller on your Wi-Fi network using your mobile phone and the Stadia app Stadia icon.

Turn off your Stadia Controller

From the Stadia menu when linked wirelessly

  1. Press and hold the Stadia button Stadia button until a menu appears on the screen.
  2. Select Turn off controller.
  3. Your controller will rumble and turn off.
  4. To turn your controller back on, press and hold the Stadia button Stadia button until the controller rumbles.

When connected with a USB-C cable or linked wirelessly

If your controller is connected to your device with a USB cable, unplug it and the controller will turn off automatically. If your controller is linked wirelessly or connected with a USB cable, you can can also turn off the controller using the Stadia button Stadia button.

  1. Press and hold the Stadia button Stadia button for 4 seconds.
    • The controller will rumble and its status light will turn off.
  2. To turn your controller back on:
    1. For a wired connection, plug your controller back into your computer or mobile device.
    2. For a wireless link, press and hold the Stadia button Stadia button until the controller rumbles.

Reset your Stadia Controller

Prevent your Stadia Controller from linking automatically

When you turn on your controller, you can prevent it from linking automatically to the last device it was connected to:

  1. Make sure your Stadia Controller is off.
    • If your controller is on, press and hold the Stadia button Stadia button for 4 seconds to turn it off.
  2. Press and hold the Stadia button Stadia button for 3 seconds, until your controller rumbles twice.
  3. The controller is ready for you to enter a new linking code.
Use new Wi-Fi information with your Stadia Controller

You can set up your Stadia Controller on a different Wi-Fi network:

  1. Make sure your Stadia Controller is off.
    • If your controller is on, press and hold the Stadia button Stadia button for 4 seconds to turn it off.
  2. Press and hold the Y button Y button.
  3. While holding down the Y button Y button, press the Stadia button Stadia button until the controller rumbles and the status light turns on.
  4. Release both buttons.
  5. The controller will rumble and blink orange. It is now ready for you to enter new Wi-Fi login information using the Stadia app Stadia icon.
    • Note: If you turn off the Stadia Controller before setting up new Wi-Fi information, then turn it on again, the controller will link to the previous Wi-Fi network it used.
Reset your controller (hardware reset)

If you're experiencing issues with your Stadia Controller, it can be helpful to perform a hardware reset.

  1. Press and hold the Stadia button Stadia button for 10 seconds.
  2. Do not release the Stadia button Stadia button during the 10 seconds, even if the status light blinks or the controller rumbles.
  3. Release the Stadia button Stadia button.
  4. Your controller is now turned off. To turn it back on, press the Stadia button Stadia button until the controller rumbles and the status light turns on.
Factory reset your controller

When you factory reset your Stadia Controller, all Wi-Fi login information is removed from it.

  1. Make sure your Stadia Controller is on.
  2. Press and hold the Google Assistant Assistant button and Capture Capture button buttons simultaneously for 6 seconds.
  3. The controller will vibrate and the status light will blink.

Note: After you perform a factory reset, you'll need to set up a Wi-Fi connection again in the Stadia app Stadia icon to play wirelessly with your controller.
