Send and receive chat messages

You can exchange text messages with other players on Stadia, or with members of your active party. When you're signed into Stadia on your TV, you can also use smart replies to send custom responses to messages you receive.

Get started

Before you send a chat message for the first time, you'll be prompted to set a preference for whose messages you can receive.

On stadia.com

  1. Sign into your account on stadia.com.
  2. On a Stadia Controller, press the Stadia button Stadia button.
    • On a computer keyboard, press Shift + Tab.
    • On the Stadia home screen, you can also click Friends Friends icon.
  3. Click Messages.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to choose privacy and notifications settings.

In the Stadia app

  1. On your mobile device, open the Stadia app Stadia icon.
  2. At the top of the screen, tap Friends Friends icon.
  3. Tap Messages.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to choose privacy and notifications settings.

Privacy settings and parental controls

In your privacy settings, choose whose messages will be delivered after they're sent to you. Options include All players, Friends, and Private (or No one). If you choose Friends, for example, anyone can try to send you a message, but you'll only receive messages sent by your friends.

Messaging is turned off by default for supervised members of your family group, such as children. If you're a parent, go to the Stadia family dashboard to enable Stadia messaging for supervised group members. When you enable messages for a family member, you can also choose whose messages they'll receive.

If you disable messaging for a supervised member (such as a child), they won't receive any messages that are sent to them.

Send and receive messages

On stadia.com

  1. Sign into your account on stadia.com.
  2. On a Stadia Controller, press the Stadia button Stadia button.
    • On a computer keyboard, press Shift + Tab.
    • On the Stadia home screen, you can also click Friends Friends icon.
  3. Click Messages and then click a conversation to open it.
  4. To start a new conversation, click Send a message.
  5. Type the Stadia Name or email address of the person you want to message into the text box. You can also click a friend's name to message them.
  6. Next to the player's Stadia Name, click Messages Messages.
  7. Click the text box and then type your message and then press Enter.

You can find your conversations below Messages. More recent conversations will be on top. To continue a conversation, just click it.

In the Stadia app

  1. On your mobile device, open the Stadia app Stadia icon.
  2. At the top of the screen, tap Friends Friends icon.
  3. Tap Messages and then tap a conversation to open it.
  4. To start a new conversation, tap Send a message.
  5. Type the Stadia Name or email address of the person you want to message into the text box. You can also tap a friend's name to message them.
  6. In the player list, next to the Stadia Name of the person you want to chat with, tap Messages Messages.
  7. Tap the text box and then type your message and then tap Send Send.

You can find your conversations below Messages, with more recent conversations on top. To continue a conversation, just tap it.

On a TV

At this time, you can't compose messages on your TV. However, you can send preset messages.

When you sign into Stadia on your TV using Chromecast Ultra, you may receive a prompt to re-add your Stadia account. To sign in again, follow the on-screen instructions. Read more about how to add a Stadia account to Chromecast.

After someone sends you a message on your TV, open it to send a smart reply:

  1. Sign into your Stadia account on your TV.
  2. On your Stadia Controller, press the Stadia button Stadia button.
  3. Select Messages Messages and then Select a conversation to open it.
    • Before you use messages on your TV, go to the Messages tab on stadia.com or in the Stadia app Stadia icon.
    • When you receive new messages, a dot will appear over Messages Messages in the Stadia menu.
  4. Use smart replies to respond to messages. Keep reading for instructions.

Smart replies

Smart replies are preset messages like "Hello" or "Ready?" that you can send to other players on a TV, on stadia.com, or in the Stadia app Stadia icon. When smart replies are available, they appear in your chat window. To send one to another player, just select one of the preset messages.

Message notifications

When you receive a message on Stadia, you'll get a notification:

  • On a TV or on stadia.com, a dot will appear on your friends list and on the messages section of the Stadia menu. You'll also get a popup notification.
  • In the Stadia app Stadia icon, a dot will appear on your friends icon and on the message tab in the Stadia menu. You'll also receive app notifications on your mobile device, unless you disable them in your notifications settings.
    • Note: In the Stadia app Stadia icon on iOS®, message notifications are disabled by default. In order to receive notifications, you'll be prompted to enable them the first time you use messaging on your device.

Change your notification settings

You can control whether or not you receive a notification from the Stadia app Stadia icon on your mobile device when someone sends you a message. To change this setting:

  1. On your mobile device, open the Stadia app Stadia icon.
  2. On the top right, tap your avatar and then Notifications.
  3. Turn Messages on or off.

If you miss a notification, you can go to your messages at any time. Just follow the steps below.

Send and receive party messages

When you join a party, you can type messages to its members. Anyone in the party will be able to chat as long as the party is active. After all players have left the party, the conversation will permanently disappear. If you start or join a new party, a new conversation will begin.

On stadia.com

  1. Start or join a party.
  2. In the Stadia menu, click View party and then Chat.
  3. Click the text box and then type your message and then press Enter.

In the Stadia app

  1. Start or join a party on your TV or on stadia.com.
  2. On your mobile device, open the Stadia app Stadia icon.
  3. At the top of the screen, tap Friends Friends icon.
  4. Tap Messages and then tap a party conversation.
  5. Tap the text box and then type your message and then tap Send Send.

On a TV

  1. Start or join a party.
  2. In the Stadia menu, select View party and then Chat.
  3. Select a smart reply.

Messages and blocked players

If you block another player on Stadia, you won't receive any messages they send to you, and the blocked player won't receive any notification that they've been blocked.

If you're in a party with a player you've blocked, they'll receive your messages to the party, but you won't receive any of the messages they send to the group.
