When you link your Stadia Controller wirelessly to Stadia, you can plug a secondary controller directly into its USB-C® port. When you press buttons on the secondary controller, it will act as though the primary controller's buttons are being pressed. This is called Tandem Mode.
You can use either controller to play games on Stadia, or both at the same time.
Note: Vibration on your primary Stadia Controller is turned off when a secondary controller is connected. To override this, hold the down button on the Direction Pad while connecting the secondary controller and continue to hold for 3 seconds after connecting.
A note about experimental features
This is an early, experimental version of this feature that is intended to expand the input device options for Stadia players. A limited set of controllers are currently supported. Check below for more information.
How to use Tandem Mode
To use Tandem Mode:
- Turn on your primary Stadia Controller.
- Connect your Stadia Controller to the screen you want to play on, using the screen's linking code.
- Make sure the secondary controller is charged and turned off.
- Using a USB cable, connect the secondary controller to your primary Stadia Controller's USB-C port.
- If you use a USB A-to-C adapter, make sure the adapter side is connected to your primary controller.
- If you connect two Stadia Controllers, power down your secondary controller before plugging it into your primary controller.
Tandem Mode improves Stadia accessibility by offering more flexibility. With Tandem Mode you can use an alternate controller, such as the Xbox Adaptive Controller®, when you play games on Stadia. Check below for a list of supported controllers.
When playing with your Stadia Controller wirelessly on any supported screen, you can also use the second controller at the same time to better accommodate your accessibility needs, either by yourself or collaboratively with a second player. Tandem Mode complements other accessibility features.

Do I have to be linked wirelessly to Stadia to use Tandem Mode?
Yes. To use Tandem Mode, your Stadia Controller must be linked wirelessly to Stadia.
How do I connect the controllers? What kind of cable should I use?
You can connect two controllers using a USB cable with the correct plugs. For the side connected to your primary (first) Stadia Controller, you'll need a USB-C connector or a USB A-to-C adapter. For the side connected to most of the supported secondary controllers, you'll need a USB-C or Micro-USB connector. The wired Xbox 360 Controller requires an adapter to provide a USB-A connector that can be used with a USB A-to-C adapter plugged into the primary Stadia Controller. Wireless adapters with a USB-A connector can be plugged directly into such an A-to-C adapter.

Can I use Tandem Mode if my primary Stadia Controller is connected to my device with a USB-C cable?
No. To use Tandem Mode, your Stadia Controller must be linked wirelessly to Stadia. Tandem Mode works with any compatible screen that your Stadia Controller is linked to wirelessly.
You can connect one or more controllers to your computer or mobile device by connecting a USB cable to individual USB ports or a USB hub, but your controllers will still be registered as individual devices when you connect them with a cable to a Stadia-compatible device.
Two or more of my Stadia Controllers are linked separately to Stadia. Which of these controllers can use Tandem Mode?
Every Stadia Controller you link wirelessly to Stadia can use Tandem Mode independently.
Can I use a USB hub or USB splitter to plug more than one controller into my primary Stadia Controller?
No. You can only connect one secondary controller to your primary Stadia Controller for Tandem Mode. The primary Stadia Controller is linked wirelessly, and the secondary controller is plugged directly into the Stadia Controller with a USB cable.
When I plug a secondary controller into my Stadia Controller, can a second player use it?
In Tandem Mode, inputs from both controllers are registered as if they're coming from your primary, wirelessly linked Stadia Controller. This means you and a second player can play in a cooperative “friend mode” where you share the game's inputs.
Stadia and the game will only display your primary, wirelessly linked Stadia Controller. Pressing a button on either controller will result in the same action in the game.
To link additional controllers to your screen, link them separately to your screen.
Can I use an audio headset in Tandem Mode?
You can plug a headset into the 3.5mm audio jack of the primary controller. Audio is not supported on the secondary controller, and when using Tandem Mode, the USB port on the primary controller can only be used for connecting the secondary controller.
