How to use Socratic

Learn how to get help and explore results in Socratic with this step-by-step guide.

Step 1: Download and open the app

Socratic is available in the App Store on iOS and in the Google Play Store on Android for users who are 13 years and older. Follow these instructions on your device to get started:

  1. Install the Socratic app on iOS or Android

  2. After you install the app, open it.

  3. Sign in with your Google Account.

Step 2: Ask for help

You can use Socratic to ask questions about whatever you need help with. Review the following steps to learn more:

  1. Decide how you want to ask Socratic for help:

    • Take a photo of your problem. This approach is good for complex problems that are difficult to type or say out loud.
      You can also take a photo of a textbook page or teacher handout. This lets you access alternative explanations for the same concepts that are covered in those class materials.

    • Use your voice to ask a question.

    • Type your question.

  1. Read step-by-step instruction about how to use your device's camera, keyboard, or microphone to ask for help.

Step 3: View the results

Socratic presents concept overviews, explanatory steps, video walkthroughs, and other educational resources that help you better understand the questions. To find out more, learn how Socratic presents the resources and explanations it finds.

Step 4: Use the Explorer to browse topics

With the Explorer, you can browse subjects and related topics to discover more information about your area of study. Follow these instructions to use the Explorer:

  1. Before you enter a question, scroll down to see the subjects you can explore.

  2. Tap a subject, such as Biology or Fiction, to see a list of topics related to that subject.

  3. Tap a topic to see Explainers that talk about the concept in depth.
