Why do embedded hyperlinks in New Google Sites operate as a redirect 2 Recommended Answers 10 Replies 25 Upvotes

When I embed a hyperlink in a New Google Sites webpage, it stores the hyperlink but in operation, it becomes a redirect with https://www.google.com/url and then the original url is html encoded. Is this standard behaviour? Why?

Thanks for your reply Steve. Is this in any google help / answers documentation?

Ouch! As far as I am concerned, this is a major change to product functionality when compared to Classic Sites. If it was transparent, this would not raise an eyebrow to visitors but some urls pause quite a while before proceeding to complete the re-direction. What this is due to - google server speed, browser config, whatever, it means that the website is no longer seamless.

Hi,

Nothing official in the google help pages that I know of.  I found what I could on this,

I realize that this security feature can be counter productive to some legitimate webmasters, but guess it all makes sense to the degree that the google sites product deters use by the spammers/malicious operators or those who just try to game google's algorithms to gain a unfair advantage over Webmaster Google Guidelines.  Which some of the bad operators out there can cause great harm to visitors and prevention policies are a very high priority to Google.

With any delays due to the redirect, I imagine several factors can be in play.  It is all an extra step that a click has to go through.  I imagine a new/different http look-up, google checks out the destination url, perhaps higher latency on occasion.

Hi Steve,

Again, thanks for your efforts on this. And I understand your proposed reasoning and rationale. However, this mandatory redirect (with no workaround) is not preferred in New Sites. Classic was readily useable as an easy to use website creation tool.

New Sites with this hindrance is a major bummer. On my Windows PC using Chrome, Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge, the redirect is not annoying for one use, a blink of an eye. But just imagine if someone really likes my website and clicks a lot of links, the blink becomes annoying.

My main reason is to support a colleague. In their office environment, it is not a blink of an eye, the redirect page for some reason, stops and does not proceed to the destination until the visitor clicks the destination url in the redirect page one more time. I've asked another colleague to check out this aberrant behaviour.

To test links out I made this webpage in new sites

  • If the link is to a Google Docs or Sheets file, redirect is not implemented
  • If you make a New Sites button, redirect is implemented
  • For any other webpage external to the New Sites, redirect is implemented
  • If you put embedded hyperlinks in a Docs document or a Sheets document and further embed the document in the New Sites webpage, redirect is not implemented. But the New Sites webpage can't be formatted to be seamless.

I am having a similar issue.  I have updated our School Teacher Website from the original Google Sites to the New Google Sites.  I have embedded a user group, created in Google, and the user must now click twice to open an email and click twice to go back. This was not an issue before when using the old version.  I get an error message when trying to embed the code but it will load the page if I use the url link.  I have attached a short videol
