How can I change the thumbnail preview? When I send my link, I only see the purple Sites icon. 1 Recommended Answer 44 Replies 166 Upvotes

I love my Google website, and have personalized as I want to. I even changed my favicon, which I love! However, when I send the link (such as via text), the preview is still the default Google Sites icon. This takes away a lot of professionalism from my site. I'd like a simple image or logo to pop up as a preview.

Google Sites Icon (taken from my HTML)

My site is MyriadEducation.com

I think I found code for changing the thumbnail preview, but I also can't figure out how to find my image address within the website.
<meta property="og:image" content="YOURIMAGEURLGOESHERE.JPG">

That said, I am not great at HTML and could be on the wrong track. Any help would be so appreciated!

I also just sent feedback. This is a crucial piece that would really improve and accelerate the effectiveness of using google sites.

Same boat, same problem. Submitted feedback!

Yup. Still an issue.

Our site is www.CentralEV.org, and it would be really nice to have a legit image pop up in the social networks preview. We will shout all day that we use Google Sites, but it just seems more professional to have your own image. We have specific goals - a lot of our goals rely on the social impact of our image. If someone is thinking "this image has nothing to do with this post," then they will not be impacted by our message.

Based on the current issues with thumbnails and URL sharing google sites is currently  not a viable website solution unfortunately  you find out once you have finished your site. l it’s extremely frustrating to discover that all the effort you put into creating you google website is  wasted because you can not effectively share your site on any social media including twitter, linked in, face book, messenger, so what is the point in  having a website if you are not on the front page of google either? Please up vote this issue so that it gets to the to of the queue

I definitely am not a fan of the fact that it takes away from the professionalism of my site with a generic icon. Please help!

Just sent feedback on my end as well. I was so excited to launch our site and now I feel like their icon showing instead of mine when I share the link really cheapens the overall feel. It's the ONE complaint I have. Otherwise super happy with Google Sites! I hope they adjust ASAP.

SOLVED! You cannot change or add the og:image tag or any open graph tags of your google sites, but you can use other tools that give you option to choose appropriate thumbnail and title while sharing your google site links.
I have created this tool to handle this specific problem https://abhimantra.net/linkshare

It works for facebook, twitter, linkedin, whatsapp, messenger and all sharing platforms that respects opengraph for displaying title and image. Give it a try. If you liked it, please share it with others.

Awesome thanks so much Abhimantra you are a legend

the share buttons worked eg facebook but copying the link and pasting on messenger did not work?

Not sure if that's any better. Now it has your info there at the top. I understand you want that but as far as promoting my business it would be better if your info was smaller at the very bottom.

IF ANY OF YOU KNOW WHAT FAVICON MEANS PLEASE TELL ME
The favicon is the icon for the site in your browser tab and it's normally used as the icon next to the book mark in your browser

Supporting this as well. In my opinion it does look unprofessional/scammy when sharing the link anywhere. It makes people suspicious whether they should open/trust the shared link.

I applied the following workaround for this problem on a Google Site I run, proxying the traffic through Apache and using mod_substitute to inject the Open Graph meta tags. It is not elegant, but it works. Unfortunately, it requires some basic Linux sysadmin and IaaS cloud computing skills, as well as an $8 monthly expense.
  • I added a subdomain origin.mydomainhere.com in the Google Site configuration and in DNS, pointing to the Google Site.

  • I setup a t3a.micro instance in my AWS EC2 account running Amazon Linux 2. I have TCP ports 22, 80, and 443 open to all.

  • I added a DNS subdomain proxy.mydomainhere.com pointing to the EC2 instance for testing purposes.

  • I setup Apache httpd with virtual hosts for http and https, for domains proxy.mydomainhere.com, www.mydomainhere.com, and mydomainhere.com, and certbot for installing and automatically renewing SSL certs: https://certbot.eff.org/lets-encrypt/centosrhel7-apache

  • In the SSL virtual host, I’ve setup a reverse Apache proxy with mod_substitute to inject the tags:
SSLProxyEngine On
SSLProxyVerify require
SSLProxyVerifyDepth 10
SSLProxyCACertificateFile /etc/pki/tls/certs/ca-bundle.crt

ProxyPass /static !
ProxyPass / https://origin.mydomainhere.com/
ProxyPassReverse / https://origin.mydomainhere.com/

<Location />
  AddOutputFilterByType INFLATE;SUBSTITUTE;DEFLATE text/html
  Substitute "s|<head>|<head><meta property=\"og:image\" content=\"https://www.mydomainhere.com/static/og-image.png\" /><meta property=og:description content=\"My description here.\">|n"
  Substitute "s|og:url|null|n"
</Location>
  • On the EC2 instance, I uploaded the image to /var/www/html/static/og-image.png.
  • I used the Facebook sharing debugger for testing: https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/

  • I also did some tinkering with og-image.png to get it to look right on both web and mobile.

  • After all tests were successful, I cutover the DNS for mydomainhere.com and www.mydomainhere.com from Google Sites to the EC2 instance.

Everyone on this thread  who is still frustrated by Google not providing an image thumbnail in a link please follow these instructions to get it on their radar else it will not be fixed.

In your google sites account goto each site and click the three dots (1)  then choose "Report a problem" (2) see image below;

then type the following our add your own description of your frustration:

Dear Google Sites

URGENT - Please change the settings on Google sites configuration in order for an individual image to be shown when posting links from a google site page to social networks.  Without this thumbnail image in the link share it is not worthwhile creating a google site because you can not effectively share it on social media since the google sites icon is so ugly. It is extremely frustrating to learn this after going to the trouble of building a Google site and publishing it only to find you need to goto some other website publishing tool.  Thank you and please make this available as soon as possible.
