Redesign your Google sites

You can change the look and style of your site at any time.

Note: This section is for new Google Sites (at the bottom right, you'll see Create Create). Get help with classic Google Sites.

Choose a theme for your site

Use pre-made themes

  1. On a computer, open a site in new Google Sites.
  2. At the right, click Themes.
  3. Under 'Created by Google', select a pre-made theme.

Import a custom theme from another site

  1. On a computer, open a site in new Google Sites.
  2. At the right, click Themes.
  3. Under 'Custom', select Import theme .
  4. Select any site and then Select a theme.
  5. Click Import theme.

Use custom themes

With custom themes, you can: 

  • Create and apply different backgrounds and text colours throughout your site.
  • Set default text styles.
  • Add brand images or favicons.
  • Customise other site properties such as:
    • Buttons
    • Dividers
    • Links
    • Image carousels
  • Change the site width.
  • Change the colour of your menu text and background.
    • Tip: To change your menu's location, click Settings Settings and then Navigation.

Create a custom theme

  1. On a computer, open a site in Google Sites .
  2. On the right panel, click Themes.
  3. Under 'Custom', select Create theme Plus.
  4. Enter a name for your theme.
  5. Select Next.
    • You can also add a logo and banner image.
  6. Select a colour palette and then Next.
    • To choose specific colours for different parts of your site, select Customise colours.
  7. Choose your fonts.
  8. Select Create theme.
    • In the right panel, you can continue to customise your theme.

Edit a custom theme

  1. On a computer, open a site in Google Sites .
  2. On the right panel, click Themes.
  3. Under 'Custom', select a theme.
  4. At the top right-hand corner, select More More and then Edit.
Show and customise frame
  1. On a computer, open a site in Google Sites .
  2. After you create a custom theme, on the right panel, click Themes.
  3. Under 'Custom', select a theme.
  4. At the top right-hand corner, select More More and then Edit.
  5. Under 'Spacing', check the 'Show frame' checkbox.
  6. Select the colour of the frame.

Important: To use page frames, you have to place your site menu at the top of the site. Under 'Navigation', set the 'Mode' to Top.

Adjust site width
  1. On a computer, open a site in Google Sites .
  2. After you create a custom theme, on the right panel, click Themes.
  3. Under 'Custom', select a theme.
  4. At the top right-hand corner, select More More and then Edit.
  5. Under 'Spacing', select the site width.
    • Default: Recommended for sites that have less content and will appear spread out
    • Full: Recommended for sites that have more content and will appear densely packed
    • Wide: Recommended for sites that fall between default and full

Change your site's style

Tip: You must have more than one page to change the menu location.

Change the font

If you're using a pre-made theme

  1. On the right, click Themes.
  2. Click Font style and choose an option.
  3. To publish your changes, at the top right, click Publish.

If you're using a custom theme

  1. On the right, click Themes.
  2. Under 'Custom', find the custom theme you want to edit. 
  3. In the upper right corner, select More More and then Edit.
  4. Click Text 
  5. Select a text style you want to edit, and make changes to the font and formatting.
  6. To publish your changes, at the top right, click Publish.
Change how a section looks
  1. Point to a section on the page. Then, at the left, click Background Color.
  2. Choose a style or add a photo.

Move the menu to the top or left

Note: You must have more than one page to change the menu location.

  1. In the top right corner, click Settings Settings.
  2. In the 'Settings' window, go to Navigation and then Mode.
  3. Choose Top or Side.
  4. At the top right, click Publish.

Change the colour of the menu

If you're using a pre-made theme

  1. In the top right corner, click Settings Settings.
  2. In the 'Settings' window, go to Navigation and then Colour.
  3. Choose Transparent, White, or Black. 
  4. At the top right, click Publish.

If you're using a custom theme

  1. On the right, select the 'Themes' panel.
  2. Under 'Custom', find the custom theme you want to edit. 
  3. In the upper right corner, select More More and then Edit.
  4. Click Navigation.
  5. Under 'Background', change the colour of the menu, or select 'Transparent at top'.
  6. To publish your changes, at the top right, click Publish.

Change the theme or layout

Choose a style

  1. On a computer, open a site in classic Google Sites.
  2. At the top right, click More actions Settings and then Manage site.
  3. In the menu on the left, click Themes, Colours, and Fonts.
  4. Under 'Base theme', click Expand Expand all.
  5. Choose a new theme.
  6. At the top, click Save.

Change the layout

  1. On a computer, open a site in classic Google Sites.
  2. At the top right, click More actions Settings and then Edit site layout.
  3. In the menu at the top, choose an item.
  4. Make changes to the layout.
  5. When done, at the top right, click Close.

Change the background or font

Change the background

  1. On a computer, open a site in classic Google Sites.
  2. At the top right, click More actions Settings and then Manage site.
  3. In the menu on the left, click Themes, Colours, and Fonts.
  4. Make changes to the background. Then, at the top, click Save.

Change the font style, colour, or size

  1. On a computer, open a site in classic Google Sites.
  2. At the top right, click More actions Settings and then Manage site.
  3. In the menu on the left, click Themes, Colours, and Fonts.
  4. Under 'Background', click Text.
  5. Make changes to the font. Then, at the top, click Save.
