Change your site’s layout

You can change your site’s layout and add navigation bars, sidebars, headers, and custom footers.

Note: This article is for the classic Google Sites (no “Publish” button at the top right). Get help for the new Google Sites.

Choose your layout elements

  1. Open your website in Google Sites.
  2. Click More options More actions and then Edit site layout.
    • To hide or show an element, go to the toolbar and click it.
    • To edit an element, click it on the page and follow the instructions in the window.
  3. When done, go to the top right and click Close.

What you can edit

Each element has different settings you can adjust.

Add or change the header

You can add your page’s title in a header. You can also:

  • Change the header’s height.
  • Change the header’s text alignment.
  • Upload and select a site logo to show up on every page.

Note: For best results, use image logos that are 145 px x 52 px.

Add a horizontal navigation bar

You can add links to pages on your sites in the horizontal navigation bar. You can also:

  • Add or remove pages on the site
  • Add URLs that link to other sites
  • Reorganize pages and links
  • Add a link to the sitemap
  • Change how the link looks

Add a drop-down menu to the navigation bar

To put a child link or page in a drop-down menu under another, in the "Select pages to show" box, select the page you want moved and then click Indent Indent. To move the page back out, click Back Back.

Add or change a custom footer

You can put text, images, or other content in a custom footer so it shows up on every page.

Add and edit a sidebar

You can put a sidebar on your site for gadgets like text boxes, navigation links, or Google+ badges.

To change the sidebar orientation and size, go to the top of the sidebar and click Edit Edit.

To add gadgets, click Add Add and then click Add next to each gadget you want.

  • To edit a gadget, click it.
  • To move a gadget, drag it.
  • To remove a gadget, click Remove Remove.

Change your site’s width

In the toolbar at the top, click Custom and enter a width.
