About migrating Google Ads accounts to parallel tracking

Google Ads  parallel tracking improves your landing page speed by sending customers directly from your ad to your final URL while click measurement happens in the background. While Search Ads 360 can track conversions and report clicks for Google Ads accounts that use parallel tracking, some Search Ads 360 features are not compatible with parallel tracking or may not work the way you expect. There may be other issues that are unique to your site or third-party tracking services that can cause measurement interruptions when parallel tracking is turned on.

To prevent interruptions in using Search Ads 360 features, potential landing page errors, and potential issues with measuring clicks and conversions, use Search Ads 360 to migrate your Google Ads engine accounts to be compatible with parallel tracking by October 30, 2018. Starting October 30, parallel tracking will be required for all Google Ads accounts.

How to migrate your accounts

Before you migrate, make sure you've done the following:

Migrate your accounts:

  1. Migrate Search Ads 360 parameters and macros.
To support features such as the Google Analytics integration and cross-channel remarketing, Search Ads 360 needs to create specific URL parameters in each account's Final URL Suffix. In addition, most Search Ads 360 macros need to migrate to custom parameters (some macros are no longer supported in Google Ads engine accounts and should be removed).

This step may result in your accounts being placed under review by Google Ads.

  2. Move tracking parameters and remove unsupported macros.

Tracking parameters that your landing pages require should be moved from URL templates to a Final URL Suffix or to your landing page URLs. As mentioned in the previous step, some macros are no longer supported in Google Ads engine accounts and should be removed.

Changing parameters in your landing page URLs may result in your account being placed under review.

  3. Find and fix any remaining compatibility issues in your account. Search Ads 360 provides two reports to help you find compatibility issues:

    • The compatibility checker report, which shows potential issues with Search Ads 360 features. You can access the report from the engine account settings panel.

    • The URL test report, which can reveal issues that are unique to your site or third-party tracking services. You can download the report from the engine account settings panel.

  4. Optionally try parallel tracking in specific campaigns.
If the campaigns perform as expected, enable parallel tracking for one or more accounts.

After migrating your accounts, enable parallel tracking by doing one of the following:

  • (Recommended) Use the Search Ads 360 UI to enable parallel tracking for one or more engine accounts.
Enable parallel tracking right after you upgrade your accounts to get improved landing page speed as soon as possible.
  • Wait until October 30th, when all Google Ads accounts will automatically use parallel tracking.

Download a migration checklist to help you track your progress.

New accounts are already compatible

New Google Ads engine accounts you create from Search Ads 360 after September 20, 2018, don't need to be fully migrated. They're ready to support parallel tracking, and all you need to do for these newly created accounts is enable parallel tracking.

Ads in the standard format cannot be updated

If your account still contains standard text ads or dynamic ads in the standard format, be aware that it isn't possible to migrate parameters or macros in URLs or URL templates for these ads. Standard text and dynamic ads cannot be edited, nor is it possible to remove the old ad and create a new standard text or dynamic ad in its place.

If your landing pages or third-party trackers rely on URL parameters that you've defined for standard text or dynamic ads, you need to manually recreate the ads in the expanded text ad format. Otherwise, you could lose click tracking in Search Ads 360 for these ads, and clicking these ads may result in landing page errors.

Next steps

  1. Migrate your accounts as described above.
  2.  Enable parallel tracking
  3. Then learn about Search Ads 360 features that change after you migrate and enable parallel tracking. You may need to make additional changes in your account.
