Flash video encoding best practices
Determine site requirements
- Progressive vs. streaming: Site specifications determine which format you use, so check the media plan first, or create versions of both. Progressive video provides better quality with smoother playback because the video is downloaded to the viewer's computer while it's playing. Streaming video plays directly from the server that it's hosted on, which can result in choppy playback for high-data-rate files, but the video is never downloaded to the viewer's computer.
Streaming video may be blocked by end-user firewalls.
- Total video size: Some sites have video-size limits specific to each ad type, such as YouTube mastheads, so be sure to consult site specifications to determine maximum file size before encoding.
