Human exposure to radio frequency energy

Like any other phone, your wireless device emits radio frequency energy (RF) during use. According to the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), the critical effect of RF exposure relevant to human health and safety is heating of exposed tissue.

According to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), “Some health and safety interest groups have interpreted certain reports to suggest that wireless device use may be linked to cancer and other illnesses, posing potentially greater risks for children than adults. While these assertions have gained increased public attention, currently no scientific evidence establishes a causal link between wireless device use and cancer or other illnesses.”

However, above a certain level (referred to as the threshold) depending on the duration of exposure, RF exposure and the accompanying temperature rise can provoke serious health effects, such as heatstroke and tissue damage (burns). To avoid hazards to health deriving from high RF exposure, limits are set in relation to the threshold known to show adverse effects, with an additional reduction factor to take care of scientific uncertainties. These limits are generally expressed in terms of the specific absorption rate (SAR). SAR is a measure of the rate of absorption of RF energy in the body. Tests for SAR are conducted with the phone transmitting at its highest power level in all tested frequency bands. SAR-limits were first established in 1996 by the FCC in the USA and they were then adopted elsewhere.

You can find additional information about SAR at the following pages:

  • fcc.gov
  • icnirp.org
  • ec.europa.eu

Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL were tested and certified to not exceed SAR limits in the U.S., Canada, European Union, Australia, or India. Pixel 2 XL was additionally tested and certified to not exceed SAR in Singapore. You can find the SAR values applicable in each of those jurisdiction on your phone: Settings > About phone > Regulatory labels.

Your phone is a radio transmitter and receiver. It complies with the international guidelines in relation to the limiting of human exposure to electromagnetic fields, and has been specifically designed to meet the guidelines for exposure to radio waves established by the Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Government of India ("DoT"). The guidelines use a unit of measurement known as Specific Absorption Rate ("SAR") which is a unit of body-absorbed radio frequency quantity when the phone is in use. The SAR limit in India for mobile devices is 1.6 W/kg over a mass of 1 gram of human tissue.

Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL comply with these guidelines when used near your ear or at a distance of 1.0 cm from your body. Ensure that the device accessories, such as a device case and device holster, are not composed of metal components. Keep the device away from your body to meet the distance requirement. For Pixel 2 , the highest Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) value reported for this device type when tested at the ear is 0.92 W/kg, and when properly worn on the body is 0.41 W/kg. For Pixel 2 XL , the highest Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) value reported for this device type when tested at the ear is 0.74 W/kg, and when properly worn on the body is 0.84 W/kg.

You can also see SAR values on the website of the DoT/ Telecommunication Engineering Centre.

While most of the laboratory studies have been unable to find a direct link between exposure to radio frequency radiation and health, the DoT has prescribed the following precautionary measures while using the mobile handset:

Use a wireless hands-free system (headphone, headset) with a lower power Bluetooth emitter.

Make sure the cell phone has a low SAR. Keep your calls short or send a text message (SMS) instead. This advice applies especially to children, adolescents, and pregnant women.

Use your cell phone when the signal quality is good. People having active medical implants should preferably keep the cell phone at least 15 cm away from the implant.

Recycling, e-waste management and handling statement

Don't put batteries in trash

In India, this label indicates that this product should not be thrown away with household waste. It should be deposited at an appropriate facility to allow recovery and recycling.

Google declares that your phone has been designed and manufactured in compliance with E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2016 (hereafter ""the Rules""), and is specifically in compliance with Rule 16 (1) on the reduction in the use of hazardous substances in the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment and their maximum allowed concentrations by weight in the homogenous materials (except for the exemptions listed in schedule II).

Improper handling, disposal, accidental breakage, damage or improper recycling of e-waste may present risks, including, but not limited to, fire, explosion and/or other hazards, and uncontrolled waste disposal which may be detrimental to/have adverse effects on the environment as it prevents reuse of resources. Some e-waste may contain hazardous chemicals which, if disposed improperly, may make water, soil and other natural resources toxic. Improper disposal may cause harm to plant, animal and human life.

Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) information

The radiated output power of Pixel 2 XL is below the radio frequency exposure limits. These devices have been evaluated for and shown compliant with the IMDA Radio Frequency (RF) Exposure limits. These devices should be used in a manner such that the potential for human contact during normal operation is minimized.

When using the device next to your body (other than in your hand or against your head), maintain a distance of 1.0 cm from your body for Pixel 2 XL, to be consistent with how each device is tested for compliance with RF exposure requirements.

Ensure that the device accessories, such as a device case and device holster, are not composed of metal components.

Pixel 2 XL maximum SAR values as reported to IMDA are

  • 0.61 W/kg when holding it to your ear
  • 1.08 W/kg when properly worn on the body
