Moderate a Community

When you create a Community, you are the owner. You can let other people moderate the Community, or you can add another owner. You can also decide which members’ posts to moderate.

A Community owner can:

  • Invite people to join the Community
  • Approve requests to join
  • Ban or remove people
  • Edit information about the Community
  • Moderate posts and comments, for example, pinning posts to feature them or removing offensive posts or comments
  • Make other members Community moderators or owners
  • Remove other members as moderators or owners
  • Delete the Community
  • Step down as an owner and become a moderator or member

A Community moderator can:

  • Moderate posts and comments, for example, pinning posts to feature them or removing offensive posts
  • Invite people to join the Community
  • Approve requests to join
  • Ban or remove people
  • Edit information about the Community
  • Step down as a moderator and become a member

Note: Owners and moderators may not be able to do some things if members of the Community are suspended.

Make someone a moderator or owner

  1. Open Google+.
  2. In the Navigation menu, click Communities .
  3. Click Yours.
  4. Click the Community you want.
  5. At the bottom of the Community’s banner, click the photos of the Community members.
  6. Next to the person you want to promote, click More More.
  7. Choose Promote from member to moderator or Promote from moderator to owner.

Note: To make someone an owner, you first have to make them a moderator.

Remove someone as moderator or owner

  1. Open Google+.
  2. In the Navigation menu, click Communities .
  3. Click Yours.
  4. Click the Community you want.
  5. At the bottom of the Community’s banner, click the photos of the Community members.
  6. Next to the person you want to remove, click More More.
  7. Choose Demote from owner to moderator, Demote from moderator to member, or Demote from owner to member.

Invite someone to join your Community

You can invite people to your Community and share posts about your Community with them. If your Community is set to "private" or "request to join,” inviting someone adds them to the "Invited" members list. Only moderators and owners can see the list.

To invite someone to join your Community:

  1. Open Google+.
  2. In the Navigation menu, click Communities .
  3. Click Yours.
  4. Click the Community you want to invite someone to.
  5. In the top right, click Share .
  6. Click Invite people.
  7. Choose who you want to invite.
  8. Click Done.
  9. Enter a message.
  10. Click Post.

Cancel an invitation

In Communities that are private or that people have to request to join, you can cancel an invitation:

  1. Open Google+.
  2. In the Navigation menu, click Communities .
  3. Click Yours.
  4. Click the Community you want to cancel the invitation for.
  5. At the bottom of the Community’s banner, click the photos of the Community members.
  6. Next to “Members,” click the Down arrow Down Arrow.
  7. Choose “Invited.”
  8. Next to the name of the person whose invitation you want to cancel, click More More.
  9. Click Cancel invitation.

Approve member requests

When people request to join a private Community, you can approve or decline their requests:

  1. Open Google+.
  2. In the Navigation menu, click Communities .
  3. Click Yours.
  4. Click the Community you want to see member requests for.
  5. Click Moderate.
  6. Click Member requests.
  7. Check the boxes for the members you want to approve or decline.
  8. To approve a request, click Approve. To decline, click Reject.

Review posts before they show in your Community

You can review members’ posts before they’re posted to the Community.

Review and approve posts

Moderators and owners can review posts from un-approved members of their community. You can choose to auto-approve posts from a user, or ban members from the Community so they can’t post or comment.

Set up post moderation

  1. Open Google+.
  2. In the Navigation menu, click Communities .
  3. Click Yours.
  4. Click the Community you want to moderate posts for.
  5. Click More More.
  6. Click Edit Community.
  7. Switch on "Hold posts for review."
  8. Choose whose posts you want to review:
    • Everyone: all existing Community members, excluding moderators and owners
    • Only new members: new members only, excluding moderators and owners
  9. Click Done.

Review posts from members before approving them

  1. Open Google+.
  2. In the Navigation menu, click Communities .
  3. Click Yours.
  4. Click the Community you want to moderate.
  5. Click Moderate.
  6. Click Held for review.
  7. To approve a post, click Approve Done. To decline a post, click Remove Close.
  8. Click More More.
  9. Choose whether to approve the current post and all future posts from a person, or to ban the person. If you auto-approve all posts for a user, you’ll still need to manually review any posts from that person that are currently in the queue.
  10. If you're auto-approving all posts, click Got it. If you're banning someone, click Ban.

Remove posts and comments

When you remove a post or comment:

  • No one in the Community can see, share, comment on, or +1 that post or comment, other than the person who made it.
  • If the post was reshared to another Community or Collection, people can see it there.
  • People might still see the post on the profile of the person who made it.

Note: Some posts might be categorized as possible spam. Those posts will only show to Community owners and moderators, who can accept or reject the posts.

Remove a post

  1. Open Google+.
  2. In the Navigation menu, click Communities .
  3. Click Yours.
  4. Click the Community the post is in.
  5. Click the post you want to remove.
  6. Click More More.
  7. Click Delete.
  8. Click Delete again.

Remove a comment

  1. Open Google+.
  2. In the Navigation menu, click Communities .
  3. Click Yours.
  4. Click the Community the comment is in.
  5. Click the post the comment is on.
  6. Click the comment you want to remove.
  7. Click More More.
  8. Click Delete comment.
  9. Click Delete.

Add or remove stronger filters to content

You can turn on more aggressive filtering to reduce the amount of spam or inappropriate content that reaches your Community’s stream. If your Community already has this content control on, you can turn it off:

  1. Open Google+.
  2. In the Navigation menu, click Communities .
  3. Click Yours.
  4. Click the Community you want to adjust filters on.
  5. Click More More.
  6. Click Edit community.
  7. Switch on or off "Content controls."
  8. Click Done.

Note: When this setting is on, Google+'s content filter is more likely to flag posts that are questionable, so fewer of them will show up in your Community. You can see these blocked posts in your moderator queue.

Remove or ban someone

Owners and moderators can remove or ban people from a Community.

When you remove someone:

  • They leave the Community, but can join again.
  • Their posts and comments are not removed from the Community.

When you ban someone:

  • They leave the Community, but can’t join again unless you un-ban them.
  • Their posts and comments are not removed from the Community.

To remove or ban someone:

  1. Open Google+.
  2. In the Navigation menu, click Communities .
  3. Click Yours.
  4. Click the Community you want to remove or ban someone from.
  5. At the bottom of the Community’s banner, click the photos of the Community members.
  6. Next to the person you want to remove or ban, click More More.
  7. Choose Ban from Community or Remove from Community.
